Hi,
I have a question about academic job applications.
Is it a pretty universal rule that your recommendation letter writers should be senior to you in academic rank? Obviously this is true for people applying out of their PhDs and Post-Docs, but is it also true of tenured but-not-full professors? What are the general rules of thumb here?

@pjw @academicchatter This is what I have been told as well. I have also wondered about your question, especially as the service load shifts and mentoring becomes more important and central. Wouldn't it make more sense to have at least 1 junior person write a letter?

Given the excitement with Open AI, I think it's worth remembering that AI tools are already, and have for some time been marketed and sold in K-12 settings by snake oil salesmen with little input from teachers with big promises and few to no actual tangible results other than dehumanizing teaching.
Reminds me of the silicon valley elite opening all those high tech schools and keeping their own kids the heck away from them.
This is a good time to speak up teacher folx.

It is disturbing that elementary children are criminalized and unsurprising that it happens to children with disabilities and children of Color at much higher rates. There should be no policing in schools and absolutely none for young children.

@ZingerLearns@qoto.org avatar

@AlliFlowers @edutooters you think arresting them and sending them to juvi is the answer then?
I am not advocating for anarchy, but criminalizing disability is problematic, maybe we disagree on this point.

ZingerLearns,
@ZingerLearns@qoto.org avatar

@AlliFlowers @edutooters I think it would depend on the disability and setting. If someone is severely ED and poses a danger to other students there are alternatives to gen ed that are not being criminalized. I have worked with schools that specifically support these students.

ZingerLearns,
@ZingerLearns@qoto.org avatar

@AlliFlowers @edutooters is alternative the same as specific for disabilities or the school that the "bad kids go to?

ZingerLearns,
@ZingerLearns@qoto.org avatar

@AlliFlowers @edutooters and there were people and resources to support the severe ED cases for example?

ZingerLearns,
@ZingerLearns@qoto.org avatar

@AlliFlowers @edutooters I am glad that you were able to manage with what you had, but it sounds like there were not adequate resources. I appreciate the picture for perspective, and it reminds me of some settings I have seen.

ZingerLearns,
@ZingerLearns@qoto.org avatar

@jhavok @edutooters this is an important part of the big picture. There are over 40,000 "safety" officers in schools last I checked. They have never stopped a school shooting, but they do a lot of criminalizing of children, and if we didn't use the money for them, we could use it for teachers, aids, social workers, advocates, community outreach, etc ..

ZingerLearns,
@ZingerLearns@qoto.org avatar

@mjausson @edutooters I think it goes a little deeper and it's about criminalizing children of Color and those with disabilities. I don't see this happening in white suburban schools. Those families have the resources to shut this down quick.

Interesting about the persistent narrative around teacher turnover...how would it compare to industry? Especially some companies that are allegedly "good" to work for.

That is a great point, in the policy literature teachers are often bucketed into stayer, movers, and leavers.
I do wonder about how fact based the whole 50% leave in 3 years is. When I investigated, for LAUSD a very large urban district, they reported only a 5% yearly attrition rate.

I have never heard so many educators say "I don't know what to do about that" as I have seen this year, including me.
I was reminded by a colleague that some of the post-COVID things we are faced with have never been seen before and tools and skills we have previously employed do not work for some of the new challenges we face.

I have been working with a group of science teacher educators and teachers on a food waste unit based on US school lunches...

I happened to walk by an elementary school while vacationing in Paris, I could not help myself but to take a picture of the weekly lunch menu and was struck by how different it is from what we get in the US. I don't think I have ever seen anything pointing out sources, if products were organic (never seen organic lunches in traditional public schools) etc...

Seems reflective of values?

Wishing every educator starting school tomorrow a great school year.

Have a great year if this is your first year or your 25th year.
We have had some challenging and painful years, but it's educators that will make the difference, and despite all the systemic inequities in schools public education still offers the greatest possibilities for a better world!

I think there is a very wide spectrum here of invite only conferences and spaces, where on one extreme is a good old boys club and on the other extreme ways and reasons to fund liberatory and abolitionist spaces for those (especially graduate students) who normally would not get to meet, or meet in safe and affirming spaces.
As to the ratio and range of where most "invite only conferences" fall... We can just look at existing power structures within the university.
I would add to this the location and costs associated with "open" conferences that become cost inhibitive for many and effectively filter out anyone who is not extremely well funded. Some of these conferences are not open at all. One of the first things I look for are if they offer a sliding scale for registration (again, especially for graduate students) and significantly reduced cost lodging.

@ninokadic @academicchatter my recent timelines for publication have been over 2 years. Have had instances of 6-9 months for initial review and rejection without comment in some cases. I definitely would reach out to the editor after 90 days of no response. Most better journals will let you know within 2-3 months max
