Tum, to asklemmy in Which YouTuber still creates high-quality videos to this day?

I think we must have a very similar viewing list.

My favorite thing about Adam Something is that he points out consistently that nearly all the big hyped “futurism” ideas for transport and infrastructure, are just solving problems that we have already solved using trains. except it’s always slower more costly and less efficient than a train.

For some other recommendations, specially about videogames, Civvie11 does reviews and playthrough of old FPS games (the boomer shooter, Doom and Quake generation). His videos are very entertaining.

Warlockracy is similar, but for CRPGs like the original fallout and various obscure, usually eastern European mods for them. He’s also extremely entertaining.

MandaloreGaming does a mix of old and new games, usually older, and goes into great detail about them and their development and he’s probably the most fair and honest reviewer I’ve ever seen. He reviews games he thinks are interesting so sometimes they’re obscure and sometimes they’re very popular oldies.

Tum, to asklemmy in Which of your favorite creators content quality went downhill very quickly?

That’s exactly the one that came to mind first. He was able to cast a light on the self aggrandizing TED and TEDx talks that are so often full of hot air. It’s a really shame that so many fall into that pit of fascism and can never come out.

Tum, to asklemmy in Which of your favorite creators content quality went downhill very quickly?

I agree with you here. I stumbled onto his video maybe 5 years ago or so and some of them were so bizarre and hilarious, and to find out now he’s deep in the alt-right, cryptofacist nutjob space is so disappointing.

Tum, to privacy in Two minutes of DuckDuckGo rearranging & dropping results for the same search; Bing, Startpage, & DDG all unreliable vs. Google :(

I am not a search engine engineer.

Here are some things it might be though:

It could be that the results you see first are cached on their servers, and expiring from that cache between your searches. however usually when something requested is pulled from a cache, the items lifespan in the cache is usually refreshed so it lives a bit longer.

It could be that certain they are NOT cached at all, and certain sites are rate limiting the DDG crawler hitting them and returning info to you, so DDG takes them out of the results as they cannot confirm the site is alive. I noticed reddit disappeared from the results and we all know about Reddit and their APIs here.

It could also be their ranking algorithm for results is not as deterministic as they want it to be, it could also be that way by design. Page ranking is a closely guarded trade secret, especially at big places like Google. DDG results will never match 1:1 with Google. Personally, I prefer DDGs results to Google.

Tum, to asklemmy in Who's winning the war in Ukraine?

While Denys can often provide good coverage on Ukraine, I suggest avoiding him, as at the outbreak of the situation in Gaza and Israel, he shared many videos of Palestinian kids and women running from artillery under the captions like “watch how the roaches scatter”.

Tum, to technology in Firefox will support at least 200 new extensions on Android this December

YT on Firefox Mobile has the added benefit of letting you swap to desktop mode and play videos with the screen off, no YT Premium needed ;)

Been doing this for years, but if too much of a hack for you, NewPipe also supports background video, and downloading video, or just the audio, which is great if you have a lot of long form audio-focused channels like music reviews, videoessay content, etc.

Tum, to tabletopminis in Scratch built Ork Truck I've been working on today. not finished with painting yet but I'm pretty happy with how it looks!

thanks! Yeah that’s part of what drew me to Orks; I like cobbling stuff together from junk and parts, and even if it comes out a bit wonky we’ll, that’s just orks :)

I guess I could make a reply with all the individual build shots but that’s probably too much, so here’s an early shot showing the framework, it’s mostly made of sprues that held the parts for the official GW trukk, along with some cardstock of a few thicknesses and some leftover bits from an old space marine rhino I have away to a. friend whos building a battlebrothers army for OPR.

Tum, to asklemmy in What is the device you want, but that does not exist?

They make those for runners, a kind of neoprene sleeve that holds your phone on your arm either outside or inside so you can use it while you run. They’re fairly easy to find.

As for pulling it off, you just have to wear it and not give a shit. that’s the secret to pulling it off.

Tum, to memes in You just kind of get numb and accept it after a while

God damn I love communist propaganda art style. there used to be a subreddit for sharing it on reddit, is there anything similar on Lemmy?

Tum, to games in The Weekly 'What are you playing?' Discussion

I’ve never gotten past the second (or maybe third) zone of Barotrauma. usually I play with my brother, and we have a slew of mods that add new equipment and let you uninstall and reinstall equipment on subs, and we end up turning a rustbucket into a profitable cargo hauler with storage racks in every conceivable space and a wire up controller to manage the reactor for us. have you ever gotten to endgame content?

Tum, to godot in Godot needs game examples

Cassette Beasts is also Godot.

Tum, to mildlyinfuriating in Amazon Anti Union propaganda

I’ll admit ignorance to the complexity involved, I had just thought that a sharpie would be less conspicuous than a bag full of QR code stickers if management were to search employees which I believe they do in amazon warehouses. Also the communicability of it, being able to tell others in different warehouses “fill in these squares on the QR code” rsther than distribution of stickers.

Thanks for the in depth reply about feasibility of it though, very interesting!

Tum, to mildlyinfuriating in Amazon Anti Union propaganda

Someone should hijack the QR code by strategically filling in back squares with a sharpie and have it point to a pro union URL

Tum, to piracy in SmartTube - an advanced player for set-top boxes and tv running Android OS

I’d love to find something like this for the SamsungOS tvs, or at least a locally hosted alternative adblocker. I get 3-4 ads per 10 minute video now and it’s endlessly frustrating.
