I have a deep love for the "Quentin Tarantino carves a turkey sketch" from Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip (which, incidentally, is never shown on screen).

It's an advanced class in writing comedy, writing violence, and the role of the audience's imagination in storytelling.

(2022, Belgium, on Netflix) also reminds me in a way of : a group of friends break a medical taboo of "forbidden knowledge" and chaos ensues. Is this a horror subgenre and does it have a name? Or is it all just a variation on the Prometheus & Genesis stories?

My cousin may be going abroad next year as an ESL teacher. She has studied languages herself but doesn't have ESL teacher training. She has expressed an interest in reading some good books on language teaching & ESL teaching specifically to get prepared.

Can anyone in circles recommend good books on how to teach ESL that have practical, actionable advice for a smart, educated, motivated aspiring teacher?

Thank you!

There is a scene in FILIP (on Netflix) around 58:00 where a character suddenly and unexpectedly says something shockingly real.

There's little anyone can write that's more breathtaking than a moment that's personal, vulnerable and true. It's the opposite of cliched writing.

Want to wake up your audience and pivot the scene dynamics? Try this.

"In a lengthy piece for the Chronicle of Higher Education, writing professor Eric Bennett makes a case that the Iowa program, arguably the most influential force in modern American literature, was profoundly shaped by a CIA-backed effort to promote a brand of literature that trumpeted American individualism and materialism over airy socialistic ideals. Read: More Hemingway, less Dos Passos."

@ohellofedefo @writingcommunity It astonishes me about how the role of the CIA in shaping American arts & literature is well documented on the public record and yet hardly anybody knows.

Knowing is like Roddy Piper glasses: it makes the received wisdom in American writing circles look different, doesn't it?

Teachers, if you are looking for resources to talk with students about genocide within a safe, compassionate framework, my friends a Journeys in Film can help.

They have standalone guidelines for facilitating topics on difficult discussions: https://journeysinfilm.org/product/facilitation-guidelines/

They also have a lesson for teaching about Genocide in their Francesco film guide: https://journeysinfilm.org/product/francesco/

I'm sharing in case this is helpful to any of you.

Genuine question: in light of how we've witnessed disinformation spread in the pandemic, is anyone anywhere on earth effectively addressing the digital literacy and science literacy gap?

I'd love to know about who is doing good, effective work.
