RegalPotoo, to 3dprinting in What generic PETG and SLA-resin look like in a UV-vis spectrometer (420nm cutoff is the resin; PETG goes down to roughly 320nm).
@RegalPotoo@lemmy.world avatar

Neat. What sort of things could you figure out with this information?

RegalPotoo, to technology in Framework Sold Out of 3 Batches of Laptop 16 in Less Than 3 Hours.
@RegalPotoo@lemmy.world avatar

waits excitedly for Framework to ship in my region

It’s fine, my current laptop has a couple of years life left in it. They’ll open up orders by then right? Right?

RegalPotoo, to linux in Are packages from flathub always safe?
@RegalPotoo@lemmy.world avatar

They aren’t inherently safe. I don’t have any examples of Flatpak packages off FlatHub being poisoned, but FlatHub does allow “community” maintained packages - as in, someone unaffiliated with the development team of an app packages and publishes the app to FlatHub. That would seem to be a really good place to get into a supply chain if you were a bar actor.

RegalPotoo, to linux in Oppose corporate shilling on Fedora in this poll. At 299 votes, original proposal is only chosen by 16%
@RegalPotoo@lemmy.world avatar

Personally, i see metric/telemetry collection like democracy; you are perfectly entitled to not participate, but if you opt out you also forfeit your right to complain about bugs or missing features.

I work on a companion app for a piece of very expensive hardware where our users are trained on how to report problems, and I’d still have 1 stack trace from our telemetry system than 1000 user reports. Our privacy policy explicitly states that we collect some information for the purpose of identifying and fixing issues, and for product development, and that we won’t sell or share that data. We operate in the EU, so the amount of money we could get from a data broker selling that information would be a rounding error on the fines we’d see if we did.

Absolutely read the privacy policy and call out weak policies, but “metrics” and “telemetry” are not synonyms for “spying”

RegalPotoo, to 3dprinting in Good FDM pribter to try out printing?
@RegalPotoo@lemmy.world avatar

Yeah, 3d printing suffers from the same problem a lot of hardware-heavy hobbies suffer, where there is an entire tier of “entry level” models that are absolutely trash and only exist to disappoint and frustrate beginners until they upgrade or give up.

Fish keeping is also chronic for this as well - small, cheap “beginner” tanks are harder to maintain than larger ones

RegalPotoo, to linux in Stable Linux distro with up to date packages
@RegalPotoo@lemmy.world avatar

This is my preferred way off doing things, but trying to glue VSCode + Android Studio + the Flutter SDK + Docker + … together via Flatpack was an exercise in pain and sadness last time I tried it.

Getting all my normal boring desktop apps via Flatpack is awesome, but for a developer it just doesn’t seem practical right now

RegalPotoo, to selfhosted in Email Hosting w/SMTP, what do you use?
@RegalPotoo@lemmy.world avatar

Recently signed up with www.migadu.com, been great so far

RegalPotoo, to asklemmy in So... are Lemmy users also generally crypto supporters?
@RegalPotoo@lemmy.world avatar

No, fuck crypto. At best it’s a solution looking for a problem while speedrunning a century of banking regulation reform, at worst it’s an environmentally disastrous scam.

RegalPotoo, to asklemmy in What's a true fact that is so misleading it's borderline misinformation?
@RegalPotoo@lemmy.world avatar

James Hoffman did a great video on this, and yes, kinda. It’s complicated.

@RegalPotoo@lemmy.world avatar

I’ve been with gandi.net for over a decade, have nothing but good things to say about them.

RegalPotoo, to 3dprinting in Is now the time to upgrade?
@RegalPotoo@lemmy.world avatar

It Depends - is a higher speed printer going to solve a problem you have?

RegalPotoo, to android in For the people coming in asking what app for Lemmy. You don't need it. Lemmy is great on a mobile browser.
@RegalPotoo@lemmy.world avatar

But why though? What does an app get you that you can’t get by pinning the site to your home screen?

RegalPotoo, to android in Baconreader is dead
@RegalPotoo@lemmy.world avatar

Personally, I feel like Reddit has made it very clear that that don’t want me on their site - fair enough, it’s fully within their rights to do that

RegalPotoo, to android in Baconreader is dead
@RegalPotoo@lemmy.world avatar

Obligatory fuck spez. I wish you every misfortune.

On the up side, I’ve read the main 5 Foundation books in the last few weeks with time I would have otherwise been spending in Reddit and I’ve just about broken my record for “number of days since a total stranger called me an asshole”
