They aren’t inherently safe. I don’t have any examples of Flatpak packages off FlatHub being poisoned, but FlatHub does allow “community” maintained packages - as in, someone unaffiliated with the development team of an app packages and publishes the app to FlatHub. That would seem to be a really good place to get into a supply chain if you were a bar actor.
Personally, i see metric/telemetry collection like democracy; you are perfectly entitled to not participate, but if you opt out you also forfeit your right to complain about bugs or missing features.
I work on a companion app for a piece of very expensive hardware where our users are trained on how to report problems, and I’d still have 1 stack trace from our telemetry system than 1000 user reports. Our privacy policy explicitly states that we collect some information for the purpose of identifying and fixing issues, and for product development, and that we won’t sell or share that data. We operate in the EU, so the amount of money we could get from a data broker selling that information would be a rounding error on the fines we’d see if we did.
Absolutely read the privacy policy and call out weak policies, but “metrics” and “telemetry” are not synonyms for “spying”
Yeah, 3d printing suffers from the same problem a lot of hardware-heavy hobbies suffer, where there is an entire tier of “entry level” models that are absolutely trash and only exist to disappoint and frustrate beginners until they upgrade or give up.
Fish keeping is also chronic for this as well - small, cheap “beginner” tanks are harder to maintain than larger ones
This is my preferred way off doing things, but trying to glue VSCode + Android Studio + the Flutter SDK + Docker + … together via Flatpack was an exercise in pain and sadness last time I tried it.
Getting all my normal boring desktop apps via Flatpack is awesome, but for a developer it just doesn’t seem practical right now
No, fuck crypto. At best it’s a solution looking for a problem while speedrunning a century of banking regulation reform, at worst it’s an environmentally disastrous scam.
Obligatory fuck spez. I wish you every misfortune.
On the up side, I’ve read the main 5 Foundation books in the last few weeks with time I would have otherwise been spending in Reddit and I’ve just about broken my record for “number of days since a total stranger called me an asshole”
