I stopped playing OW around 2018, but a friend of mine was really into well into this year with OW2.
I've noticed they've stopped playing after the recent news about OW2 though.

What was the subreddit that represented to you the best example of downspiral of quality? To me it was /r/dataisbeautiful (kbin.social)

At first it was all about presenting data in an original looking way. In the end it was about pushing political ideas in your throat using a plain bar graph. It was not about sharing something interesting you found but about taking advantage of a captive audience.

Agreed on your point about it not just being one particular sub.
It seemed that the comment sections on most subs just devolved to lame jokes that got repeated, or spiraled into into arguments. There were obvious exceptions, but as a whole this was my experience.

I've been alternating between Kbin/Lemmy and Squabble after generally being a lurker on Reddit, and the communities for both seem a lot friendlier and willing to engage in actual discussion. So much so that I've actually started posting/commenting.
It also helps that the top comments aren't all the same overused bad joke.
