@sunflower @bookstodon Have you read the Murderbot series by Martha Wells? All Systems Red is first in the series.

I just finished a lovely YA queer coming of age with a young trans guy pianist lead - "Always the Almost" by Edward Underhill. Recommended. https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/60784592-always-the-almost

Wondering if this is an autism thing, or a me thing:

When they cast an actor in a movie, in a speaking part, but then have someone else sing and the actor just lipsyncs it. It's jarring, it throws me out of the movie and all I can think is "that's not his/her voice, how am I supposed to go along with this?"
We're watching a musical. And an actor is lipsyncing to someone else singing.

Kay,
@Kay@mastodon.nz avatar

@ScottSoCal @actuallyautistic I don't know if it's autism or not but as a hard of hearing person who supplements sound with lipreading, I get annoyed by music videos where the sound is out of sync with the visuals.

It sometimes happens even with acapella singing groups like Pentatonix who can all sing beautifully but sometimes the lip movements don't match the sound.

Not their fault but the video provider. Youtube is deliberately buggy

In case anyone is wondering if there is any engagement on here— this is the list of every book recommended after I asked if you’d share one book you enjoyed this year. You can scroll underneath the post to see these, but I think seeing them all together shows the true awesomeness of the people on here.

Thanks for being pretty darn great ❤️

Another I love is Prophet by Helen Macdonald and Sin Blaché. Not everyone's cup of tea for (off page) war stories and M/M content. Still 5 ⭐ for me.

I also gave H is for Hawk by Helen Macdonald (not SFF) 5 ⭐ - different genre, very moving.

Just got wondering today - have any of you had hyperfocus kick in when it was something you were doing, not something you're watching/reading/studying?

I used to play pool, at an average amateur level, and two games have always stuck in my memory. I was the game. I made shots I never could before. Everything was the pool table, and the cue in my hands. Both times it just happened, and I tried to to it on purpose, but that never worked. Just those two games. Autism? Or not?

@actuallyautistic

Kay,
@Kay@mastodon.nz avatar

@ScottSoCal @actuallyautistic Probably not unless all elite sports players are autistic.

For discussions on focus and emotions, read H is for Hawk by Helen Macdonald. At times in the book she feels she is the hawk she is training, she feels such complete identification.

When reality copies in scary ways - like open waters hitting 39C in Lake Tefé in the Amazon, and in coastal waters near Florida, and in the Indian scences in Kim Stanley Robinson's Ministry for the Future - what is the impact on ?

There was a poll that stated—Rowling’s opening line in the HP series is one of best in the world. Someone posted about how there are a bunch of other opening statements that are better.

Here’s one of my personal favorites, from Gabriel Garcia Marquez (English translated):
“It is inevitable. The scent of bitter almonds always reminded him of the fate of unrequited love.”

What are some of your favorite opening lines in literature? 😊

Kay,
@Kay@mastodon.nz avatar

@negative12dollarbill @Montaagge @bookstodon Yes and No. We read book one in the Potter series to our kid. This was before JKR went evil. Subsequently our kid read the rest of the series in ten days. It was a thing.

These days the kid - now an adult - mainly reads online so not as many actual books.

Other kids moved on to other books and other series. Finding the next book is important.

72 Sprig Muslin, Georgette Heyer
I started this as I wanted a book to read in the bath after the successful conclusion of operation clear the shed. I ended up turning the light out after I'd finished it. Excellent. One of Heyer's romances that actually had me uncertain which of the female leads our hero would end up with, the one he should, or the one with the obvious charms.

@bookstodon I'm looking for book recommendations for an 11yo who reads at a much more advanced level. He likes sci-fi. He has read the Hitchhiker's Guide series and loved them. I think he would enjoy some more 'hard' sci-fi as well. He needs something challenging but without subject matter that is too mature. Thanks for any help!

Kay,
@Kay@mastodon.nz avatar

@BunRab @westerling @rabbit_fighter @bookstodon If you unpick fairytales and similar, are they really suitable for children? Does the threat of bears eating children stop children from invading strangers' homes? Do stories of starving children being abandoned in the woods trouble well fed children?

Vorkosigan sagas are usually lavbelled as YA up but maturity of a child reader may not be exclude younger kids. As an 11YO I borrowed from Adult library. Anything too "mature" went over my head.

Ok tootlers, give me the name of my pharmacist in a , who is hard working, conscientious, and beleaguered, and finally ends up murdering my dude the endocrinologist.

If this is someone you know, don't tell me that, and if it is you, you are welcome to use a stage name or your real name and tell me a few facts about yourself to make the character feel like you.

@bookstodon

Kay,
@Kay@mastodon.nz avatar

@mloxton @bookstodon any tips as to age, time period and ethnicity? Is gender determined?

On basis of working, conscientious, and beleaguered, and more likely to murder an endocrinologist, I'd add some element of religious or ideological fixation so either e.g. Catholic -> Mary or anti-trans -> Jan or Graeme, or both -> Philip or John.

Family name? Chapman, or Stonehouse or other portmanteau name

When the hunter becomes the prey. My new novel ‘The High Road’ is a fast-paced contemporary thriller set mainly in central Scotland and the far north-west.

Sandwood Bay in north-west Sutherland has an important part to play in the story as it develops, and the book reaches its climax nearby.

@MarvinFreeman @lunalein @bookstodon Currently reading Tui Sutherland's series about dragons. Written for children and YAs. Easy reads but with pertinent thoughts on the nature of evil. Is a particular dragon inherently bad or have they become bad because they did bad things without thinking about impacts of their actions? Can they be redeemed? Useful prompts for kids and older people.
