@bookstodon Read this today: THEY DON'T MAKE PLUS SIZE SPACE SUITS, by Ali Thompson. In the excellent introduction, she explains that she couldn't see herself reflected in Sci Fi stories, so she wrote some short sci fi stories which specifically address fatphobia in society.

I thought the writing was great, and although we are seeing gains in sci fi diversity in general, we cannot rest until everyone can see themselves in stories.

@kimlockhartga @bookstodon True, but I always watched Star Trek TNG wondering why the future was so obsessed with stirrup pants, shoulder pads and Spandex. I mean, are those really good for any body type? And they're onsies, right? So everyone has to get undressed in the space latrine to do any business (unless they've got some kind of space age secret that allows one to avoid toilets on the Enterprise). Seems impractical for everyone other than Data, if you ask me.

@knwmoon @kimlockhartga @bookstodon Zippers seem possible. I'm also deeply disturbed by the deeper philosophical implications of the whole "transporter" thing. They're all copies of copies of copies 😬

As for fatphobia...yeah. At least recent years have gotten a little better and it's not the hellscape that was "heroine chic" in the 90s

@noodlemaz @kimlockhartga @bookstodon Now that you mention it, I recall him pulling at his top half. The ladies were all wearing onesies, tho, I thought

@beecycling @noodlemaz @kimlockhartga @bookstodon I did not know this. Figures the ladies were stuck with the onesies. And again I'm 90% sure, stirrup pants. Does anyone remember those? That and the button crotch tops for making sure your shirt stayed smoothly tucked in and your wardrobe was impossible? Ah, the 90s.
