Ok I have a question. I’m kinda a noob when it comes to privacy. I’ll follow the guides and do the things to try to minimize ad companies selling my data etc....
Some people say it’s your IP, but actually IP is rarely used for tracking
On the way to privacy there are some things you should know:
Companies know who are your friends, especially if you communicate on the same messaging apps, etc
Also they have your location
And it seems like apps and Instagram are always listening (so if you say “pizza, pizza, pizza, I really like pizza, I really want to buy pizza now around me” you will get an ad with pizza)
How do notifications work in the official Telegram Android app (Play Store vs Site version maybe)? Does it have the same mechanism as Signal, which only recognizes the presence of notifications via Google services, but sends them via its web socket service?
If you’re ready to put on tinfoil, signal is not the way to go too
Phone number requirement is a big no-no in privacy community, plus signal wants to centralize more and more, when they could actually make it possible to selfhost signal
A password manager that can keep passwords on one device, and use the passwords on the other, without the storing one being connected to any network, etc
Hmm, it seems I missed this, saw the plugin many-many times, but thought it works with USB cables
Interesting, sadly I can’t get my hands on any inputstick (the area I live in is very harsh on importing stuff except local marketplaces(which don’t have the device))
At the same time it uses Bluetooth, which makes it not fully airgapped
Maybe some time later I will get into developing something similar, but wity nrf chips
Of course you can, I can’t tell you exactly how because:
I’m really bad with iOS, I can’t even navigate to open the camera there
I mostly share subscription calendars, and one calendar with two users, but both users are from nextcloud
But in any case, caldav like the oldest and the most used calendar sharing protocol in existence Even google and other corporations use just caldav, there’s like nothing more than caldav
Started in mid November and despite repeated requests from Tuta(nota) and reassurances from MS, it’s still happening and MS have gone silent on the subject.
I’ve never thought about that If a language has characters the handwriting is a really big deal Also, there are many apps that do different similar tasks, but not all at once
Also: have you ever tried foss keyboards, let’s say, for simplified or traditional Chinese? Is the suggestion feature working well?
If it were possible to run LLMs without a significant investment to GPU prowess, this problem wouldn’t be very relevant. However, the bigger FOSS LLMs require a lot of power to run....
Thanks for explaining it, because it’s a long and complex story I didn’t want to type 😅
Also, probably the most touching point is how this happened. Gitea was a community project, and they were electing a leader every year or so, and giving them all the passwords (and it seems like the rights for the project, although it’s not stated anywhere) This “out-of-nowhere” company is just one the temporary presidents that hijacked all the domains, repos, etc. Registered a for-profit company and transfered everything there
The community itself wrote an open letter wanting explanations And at the end they forked gitea into forgejo
This a good point, the story i’m telling came from the open letter, and at that point only one guy was considered responsible, and a lot of people signed the letter
But I really consider it a serious takeover, there was a democracy, and then some of the people used their power to turn it into authoritarianism
edit: anyway, I really appreciate your point of view, and just wish everything in the world would be foss and nonprofit and hugs and kisses 😔
hi I’m still exploring stuff and I was thinking about nix, with all his stuff, what do you guys think? maybe someone with experience can tell me if I should stay away from that or could be a good choice for privacy, anonimity and security
Nixos can be more secure than classic distros. First of all, you have atomic states of your system, so nothing can be added without rebuilding the whole system and giving it a new name
Also you can do impermanence to ensure nothing can slip in for sure, because the system will be recreated every boot
It’s like giving a map of your infrastructure to a hacker, but it depends on your thread model. Most of the attacks on home servers are automated, so it shouldn’t be a consern
Another thing if your thread model is different, then the situation is not that good, but you can encrypt a lot of stuff, especially when you’re making your config reproducible
The wiki is not even recommended, since some time already nobody has access to the wiki, even to put a banner “stay away, everything is not working and outdated”
The Matrix room is the recommended channel of support
I personally think it’s a bit a waste of somebody’s time to always sit there and reply
Also, when you start understanding how this stuff works, you can start using github’s search code so you can find snippets of code and make your own (or just look at the packages’ code, it’s very basic inside)
Ah, and forgot to mention because it’s too obvious, nixpkgs search, this is basically all you need for free movement inside “nixverse”
Integrating f-droid to lemmy
