@jerry I would skip the kibana part, last time I tried it, it was a pain. I found graphana to be better. You can run graphana against mysql and skip the whole elk stack depending on what you are doing.
EDIT: while this did solve some problems for some people, it didn’t solve the notification issue that was reported.
I just found and fixed an issue with infosec.exchange that I hadn't seen in a long time. The problem was that sometimes feeds would not refresh, particularly notifications. The problem started around the time I upgraded to 4.2.0, however that isn't the problem. A look at the web server error logs shows lots of instances of this error:
24: Too many open files
This is a problem I fought a lot in the early days. The issue is the file limits in ubuntu are too low for busy web servers (infosec.exhange web servers regularly have 3000-4000 active connections)
The fix is pretty simple - adding
LimitNOFILE=1000000
to the nginx.service file. The problem is that when I upgraded mastodon, I also upgraded nginx. And apparently, like a bastard, nginx replaced the system service file, which no longer contained the LimitNOFILE=1000000 statement.
Apparently unlike the leader of another social media network, I have never turned off satellites to thwart the military operations of one of my country’s allies in their attempt to defend themselves against an aggressor.
@jerry I just started watching it and I am really liking parts of it. But they keep interrupting the good stuff with sex scenes. I don't care ! More psychohistory and math!!!
My wife and I are talking about downsizing our house. Our kids are grown and I need something before it’s time for the old folks home - but I’ve concluded the new house has to have an atrium for my orchids. I’m also liking the idea of building a house out of shipping containers but my wife is less than enthusiastic about the idea
@jerry I did a lot of research, I just downsized the house and upsized the land. Building is going to cost a lot and shipping containers are a horrible medium if you need to meet any code requirements. Better to build a small footprint eco house out of icf or some corn bricks. We ended up buying a small house 1k sq/ft on a few acres outside of a small town. Best move ever !
