Restless Books, Independent of literature, opens store in Amherst.

Europe & the rest of the world are good at works from around the world. Only 3% of US books are translations. Ilan Stavans of Amherst College wanted to rectify this imbalance. His Restless Books, founded in New York around a decade ago, has brought out c. 150 books by 120 authors from 40 countries.

Deleted my #X #Twitter account because of its evil owner, so call me ex-X as I cross it out of my nice life here in #Japan! Thanks to @dangillmor for the nudge. I'm a stickler anyway about living by #academic #ethics: https://japanned.hcommons.org/academic_life

I'm in the #Humanities Commons instance, and we have free profiles like https://hcommons.org/members/stevemccartyinjapan that include a link to the old blue bird of Twitter, and members are increasingly leaving, so our admins at @hello might want to reconsider having that item in the next version of profiles.

What can I do with all this new free time besides taking contemplative hikes in Kyoto? I'm still looking for a wide range of informants and academic colleagues, as I should have big news on #international #collaboration in 2024. I'm looking for #friends in fields such as #online #education, #bilingualism, #language #teaching with #technology, #journalism, #interculturalcommunication, and #Asia.

A little positive reinforcement goes a long way!

RSF to launch Svoboda Satellite Bouquet for independent journalism in Russia (rsf.org)

My understanding is that many people.in Russia are quite dependent on Russian state satellite TV for access to News amd Information.Prior to the war #Eutelsat facilitated transmission of major #Russian #SatelliteTV services but have reduced their involvement. I always wondered why more #Independent and #International #news and...

thanksforallthefish, to ukraine in RSF to launch Svoboda Satellite Bouquet for independent journalism in Russia

I always wondered why more and and programming wasn’t made available to residents. I know there isn’t ahuge commercial opportunity considering the type of broadcast. But content rights for Russia must be very cheap now and the value of such a service huge.

What a great idea ! Let’s allocate €100m out of the EU budget to transmitting TV into the country that has declared its desire to invade about half of our member states ! All the way to Paris was Lavryov’s (sp?) last speech.

Or on the other hand we could allocate that money to another 50 HIMARS or some patriots to stop the missles bombing hospitals, childcare centres and schools.

I vote for dead orcs over entertaining orcs.
