Five stars: Murder is a Piece of Cake by Valerie Burns and Jasmin Walker (Narrator) (2023) is the second book in the Baker Street mysteries. A second bakery is opening soon and it's owned by the sheriff's estranged husband. But before Maddy can even focus on the competition, the man is murdered, his body left in her bakery!
I wonder if the whole #AI thing will finally convince artists that modern #copyright regime was never meant to protect them.
It was meant to protect the middlemen. The Amazons, the Spotifies, the Sonys, the Disneys. The film studios, the publishing houses.
Now the middlemen figured out they own basically all of art, and that they can just train a computer on that, to replace artists with a piece of software.
And then stop paying artists even the pittance they were being paid so far.
@rysiek If you consider Audiobook Narrators to be artists and audiobooks to be art (I do, honestly, on both counts), then here is a link to my catalogue of high heat audiobooks:
In just about an hour, Sam will be taking the stream live to read you some more #WilliamHopeHodgson short stories. We've got another #Carnacki tale, and some nautical #weird#horror to follow. #CatTax included because it's #caturday
i didn't expect to like it as much as i did. i found characters in Normal People shallow and pretentious, so i thought Conversations would be similar. i've picked it because nothing more interesting was available in #Libby in audio at the moment, and – ta-da! – it was so good! it may have something to do with the format – i might appreciate Rooney's writing better in audio than in print, and the narration was just perfect #books#bookstodon@bookstodon
@bookstodon
there was a moment when the characters had "duck for dinner" or something, and the word "duck" with irish accent was pronounced almost as "dog" 🙉 i chuckled thinking "there goes that lovely spaniel", and my mind drifted to what kind of conversations these communist-anarchist-intelligentsia people would have about eating dogs 😬
now i want to re-read Normal People in audio and see if my hypothesis about format of Rooney's books is correct #books#Bookstodon#audiobook

smooths lost-cause morning hair, sets third cup of tea for the morning down and moves purring cat off the keyboard.
Helloo! Calling all lovely people who like #sff#books with lashings of mystery and detection. We've just been given some reviewer #audiobook codes for our novel, OverLondon and would love to share them with anyone with a hankering to listen, (hopefully) snort-laugh and leave a review.
OverLondon has pirate detectives. It's got rogue artificers! It's got a big explosive crime. It's got an angry badger! It's got an alternate version of London formed by the Vengeful Queen Anne Boleyn! It's got a world so vivid we regularly run #ttrpg#dnd and pathfinder campaigns based on it. It radiates awesomeness like the power of a supernova that's showing off for its grandparents!
It's narrated by Brendan McDonald who did C.K. McDonnell's amazing Stranger Times audiobooks, which roosted like Smaug on his gold pile at no 1 in the Audible charts for 3 entire days last month. (A near impossible feat!)
It's been likened to what would happen if Spike Milligan and Terry Pratchett ever wrote a book!
If the thought of listening to an amazing voice actor at the height of his game sounds like your cup of tea, just message me or reply, and we'll get you sorted with a code.
When you need to understand and retain important #information that you have #read, do you use an #electronic#book or a traditional paper #book for the purpose?
@jarulf@bookstodon I too prefer to #read a physical #book for this purpose. I find like you, that #audiobooks are not ideal for in-depth understanding and retention.
I'm going to bump my post about the audiobooks that are about to go offline. I'm about to lose out on five years of royalty sales so if you have ever thought you might like to buy one of them, please get them now while they are still available. I don't know how long they'll stay up, but based on past dealings with Apple Books & ACX, they will probably be gone forever within a week or so, maybe less.
Thanks for your support in these literally trying times. 💋
One of the publishers I narrate for, Hedon Press, has run afoul of Amazon / Audible. I just learned that 11 audiobooks I narrated are being taken down. (Yes, it's rotten.) I'm in talks with Audible, more on that as I know more.
The audiobooks are for the moment still for sale through Apple Books. If you want them, get them FAST before they're gone for good.
The books are already coming down from Apple Books. I don't know how long it will take. I am only paid in royalties on these so I'm going to take a loss on 11 books, which hurts.
If you have any interest in any of these books, please buy them now, while you can. It's my last chance to make any money back on producing them. It would really help.
"Backstage" is about the ultimate romance trope: two actors who pretend to fall in love on stage every night both need to get married quickly to solve eheir respective problems, so why not marry each other? They can pull it of as long as they don't really fall in love...
As someone who came up through theatre myself, I love a good actor romance. This one is really fun!
When @Smutty_Guy interviewed me about audiobooks, I wound up telling him a story about recording "Backstage", which was one of my funniest experiences yet as an audiobook narrator. The interview also includes a little bit more about me than I usually share on social media. 😉
