Around 70% of the previously forested Amazonian land has been converted to pastures. Much of the remaining 30% converted to croplands, mostly to grow feed for cows, buffaloes, chickens, pigs, sheep, and other animals who are farmed and killed by humans all over the world.
Plantbased diets for dogs, cats and humans would free up vast amounts of land, allowing rewilding and biodiversity recovery.
Brij Bhushan Singh sexually harassed wrestlers at every opportunity: Cops tell court
In the alleged sexual harassment case lodged against former Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief and BJP MP Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, the Delhi police said that Singh never missed an opportunity to sexually harass women wrestlers.
@vijay40@shakil_tcs@Deus@mastodonindians@prav Btw you can actually try the app from beta.prav.app and give feedback about the features. Disclaimer: we are still in beta phase and we still need to complete many steps before we can offer it to the general public.
Out of all the great punny restaurants in India, Burger Singh is probably my favorite. I wonder if his moustache looks like a crown.
A few years ago, Delhi had a coffee chain called "Sardarbaksh" with a logo suspiciously similar to a certain Seattle-based coffee empire. They were sued and changed their name to "Sardar-ji Baksh." I think they closed in the Pandemic.
A few days after arriving, we took a trip to Khan Market. Khan Market in Central Delhi is a tiny area of boutique shops, restaurants, and bars. It is one of a handful of places that you'll see a lot of expats in Delhi. It is considered India's most expensive retail market (in terms of real estate cost). We sometimes feel a little silly but we have many, many fond memories of Khan and we had to go. A few highlights from the visit:
We had a strong Irani chai, a Bombay Sandwich (in @seanbala's opinion, one of the greatest culinary gifts to mankind) and a raspberry soda.
An Irani Chai is like a normal Indian chai but made much stronger.
The Bombay Sandwich is a thick grilled vegetable sandwich with very thinly sliced beets, potatoes, cucumbers, and tomatoes, all sprinkled with a big helping of cheese. Difficult to make, impossible not to eat!
Our next stop is one of of the best places in Delhi - Fakir Chand Bookstore. This is a very, very special place and we could probably do a dozen posts on it. The store was started originally in Peshawar and moved to Delhi after partition. It is small, crowded with no discernable organization system. The owner of the shop is the third-generation of the family to own it. You could get lost here!
Dogs are a long-term commitment and a huge responsibility. They depend on you for everything and can be expensive, high-maintenance, messy, and loud. They’re not toys you can put away when you’re done playing with them. They can also make you laugh, keep you company, brighten your day, and fill your heart with unconditional love. If you feel you are ready to make a dog your number one pal, then ADOPT—DON’T BUY
On Vacation in #India with some good #books. Excited to finally read the next book by @szattwellauthor. Good to be back in #Delhi - more photos to follow over rhe next few weeks!
Is this signature written by hand directly onto the book, or is it a printed version of a handwritten signature? I want it to be the former, but my colleague thinks it's the latter.
It's of Rabindranath Tagore, Bengali poet and winner of the Nobel Prize for literature
@prabirkc@histodons thank you for your reply. Somebody on here replied to say they found a copy at New York public library, so I have contacted them to see if they can send me a photograph to compare the signature. It certainly looks different to the signatures that you found...It was published in 1938 and is a memorial address to Jagadish Chandra
Recent amendments, allowed flag made from machine (earlier only hand spun and hand woven flags were allowed) and of polyester material. Also, flags in "open or displayed on the house of a member of the public, it may be flown day and night” now.
Book review: Rahul Ranjan's 'Political Life of Memory: Birsa Munda in Contemporary India'
While we predominantly consume the image of Birsa Munda as an anti-colonial figure and in very etatised and hinduised forms, Rahul Ranjan’s Political Life of Memory: Birsa Munda in Contemporary India forcefully intervenes to bring out the voices of the subaltern. An intervention in ethnohistory and politics of indigenous groups, the book shows how memory is significant in the life and struggles of indigenous groups in the state of Jharkhand.
