Ready for liftoff! GHO rescue in Pennsylvania

State 38 - Pennsylvania

Raven Ridge Wildlife Center - Washington Boro, PA

Nice story of a GHO rescue from Pennsylvania. I don’t think the center itself is open for visits, but their Facebook page shows community events fairly often.

Their Facebook photos do show some animal injuries, so be aware if you start browsing. Wall and window strikes are a major cause of bird fatalities. The injuries this bird had were very extensive, and it was amazing they were able to fix her up. Many of the places I post receive no government funding and only get money from donations or you going to their events or visits if they offer them.

Sargent Ritter, of the Pa Game Commission contacted us about a Great Horned Owl in trouble. There was a report of an owl stuck in the water at Children’s Lake in Boiling Spring, and he was in route to investigate.

Sargent Ritter was able to locate the owl and send us photos immediately of the owl showing the current situation she was in. The owl was rescued from the water and crated up for transport to our facility for treatment.

Upon arrival the owl was exhausted, wet, smelly, and had injuries to both wings. After the wound treatments to her wings, fluids, getting cleaned up, and sone time to rest, she did better than expected. The location and proximity where she was found, we believe she could have been flying at high speed chasing prey and had collision with the cement wall.

She was a very feisty patient and made a full recovery. The owl wasted no time in taking flight and immediately disappeared into the thick tree line.

It's probably just lack of scale, but that wing span looks massive. How big are these ones?

Also the angle of that third photo in your comment, with the underside and curved arc of the wings and tail, is really interesting! You can kinda see how they generate lift by flapping and can glide, with that shape anatomy.

It’s the biggest North American owl. The Great Gray Owl is longer, but it’s more feathers than actual owl, so the GHO is heavier and has a greater wingspan at about 4.6 feet (1.4 meters.)

I’ll have to look more into bird fight. I’ve watched and read things in the unusual flyers like bees and hummingbirds, but but so much on typical birds.
