What makes a great sci-fi story?

I’m curious what users feel makes a great sci-fi story. What elements do you feel “make or break” the story specifically where sci-fi is concerned? For me, I really enjoyed the Expanse series, as it feels like there’s a sort of “believability” to it all. The authors make everything seem very realistic, even if some...

A recommendation for "Science Fiction and Other Suspect Ruminations" ( sciencefictionruminations.com )

The site is a wonderful resource for classic science fiction. Actually the author / historian is more specific about the period he covers, 1945-1985. Posts always have fascinating cover art from books and magazines, making it an invaluable time capsule. i discovered the site via the author’s Mastodon account,...

I love Sci fi but I'm very picky

Most of my favourite books/movies/TV shows are Sci fi - I love Mary Shelley, slaughterhouse five, annihilation (both the book and the movie), The Thing, x files, the invasion, and the OA. This feels like a pretty wide variety of writing styles when I line them up but 90% of the sci fi I read/watch I just don’t enjoy at all....

Foundation Shattered

Respectfully, I find the Foundation TV series extremely disheartening. I envy those who can watch Lee Pace’s triumphant acting without being completely off put by the appalling writing choices in the show. The fundamental aspects of the Robot, Empire, and Foundation series books clashe so hard with the message being presented...

Permutation City (1994) - Greg Egan ( lemmy.world )

I had no idea what I was getting into when I started this book, but it turned out to be exactly what I was looking for. In general I like hard scifi that goes as in-depth as possible about the fictional science. I think this book kind of took that concept to the next level. There are still characters in this book, but I think it...

Person of Interest ( lemmy.world )

You are being watched. The government has a secret system, a machine that spies on you every hour of every day. I designed the machine to detect acts of terror, but it sees everything. Violent crimes involving ordinary people. The government considers these people “irrelevant”. We don’t. Hunted by the authorities, we work...
