Partially. The first paragraph is. In Star Trek 5: The Final Frontier, Spock calls them ‘marshmelons’ and Kirk/Bones don’t correct Spock. The part about him on New Vulcan realizing it is hypothetical. For a giggle.
Same here to be honest. It’s a nice piece of headcanon that I feel fits his character. Especially the warmer and older Ambassador Spock we see in the Kelvin movies.
Now we need a scene in SNW where Ortegas decides to play a joke on Spock by calling them marsh melons and giving everyone else (in picturing Chapel, Uhura, M’Benga, and Sam Kirk) a “shut up and make him believe it” look.
I mean… it’d work. There’s a lot of loving references to future situations in DSC Season 2 and SNW. Also a lot of tiny references and in-jokes. It really would fit incredibly well. That’s also way more heartfelt than my buddies initial headcanon which was Boimler accidentally saying ‘marshmelons’ while nerding out in front of Spock.
If Boimler said it, Spock would probably go and ask one of his friends to have him try one of those “marsh melons” and would probably be corrected. It just seems like a very in-character thing for Ortegas to do!
But he must have gotten the joke at least by the time he melded with Bones to transfer his katra. And he never mentioned it after, probably because he realized how much they liked it
