Gruber: “These app stores rankings suggest strongly that Twitter/X is dying, and I think Threads in particular is helping to kill it. Momentum and traction are hard to gain and easy to lose.” https://daringfireball.net/2023/12/app_store_rankings_as_a_proxy_for_social_network_momentum

hankg,

@TodayInTwitter I agree with @gruber opinion that Mastodon, and by extension the rest of the fediverse, is reverting back to being a niche tech nerds platform and not vectoring towards more mainstream acceptance. The Twitter slack seems to be being absorbed by Threads and BlueSky. That doesn't mean that the fediverse never will be but that initial surge of mainstream people has definitely dropped off. Many of the ones I follow here are posting infrequently but are posting on BlueSky (one I can check) and from what I hear threads.

Most people seem to be afflicted with some kind of brain rot that leads them to think “corporate good, community bad.”

@argv_minus_one @hankg @gruber That’s literally not what’s happening at all. Read the post and please go outside in the real world and talk to real people.

Quoth the post:

> Regular people do not want to use social networks without algorithmic feeds, and do not want to use social networks whose basic premise they do not understand.

That sure sounds like brain rot to me. Using Mastodon is not rocket surgery.

@argv_minus_one Please go find friends. I don't mean this as an insult, but please go talk to real people in the real world. People like you are the reason Mastodon is destined to fail. People don't want to hang out with other people who think they're filled with “brain rot.”

People like algorithms. I like algorithms, and I'm literally a nerd. Algorithms are important. This isn't 1995.

Go touch grass.

I'm aware that a lot of people like to be told what to think by some oligarch. See also: Fox News viewers. That doesn't mean I have to respect them for it. People like that are the reason human civilization in general is destined to fail.

@argv_minus_one I don't think a single normal person who uses Instagram gives a single shit that it's partially owned by Mark Zuckerberg. You're grossly overestimating how much people care.

@hankg @gruber Actually the fediverse will take off, and it's going to be amazing. Threads will federate with ActivityPub creating this microblogging atmosphere much more akin to real blogs and RSS.

Exciting times ahead!
