"I’m calling from Israeli intelligence. We have the order to bomb. You have two hours" - a piece in the BBC interviewing Gaza dentist Mahmoud Shaheen, who was called by the IDF repeatedly and told to organize civilian evacuation of residential areas to be bombed in what is effectively a dehousing campaign.
@ashar Ethnic cleansing is moving people away from a place for the purpose of settling it, which Israel is not doing. Dehousing is intentionally destroying residential buildings; the Allies did it in WW2, in theory because they believed it would reduce German morale, in practice because the air forces were trying to defend their independent existence and didn't want to just support ground operations.
@paninid@ashar No, the purpose is to destroy infrastructure, with expectation that it will be rebuilt after the war with European and Gulf money, just like after previous Gaza wars, and that the war refugees will be able to return (to their prewar residences, not their pre-1948 ones).
@paninid@ashar Depends on who you ask... right now, neither of the political actors in charge - Netanyahu or anyone at the top of Hamas - wants two states. Center-left actors in Israel do - center-left media is pushing this as a war aim, and the current poll leader, Gantz, likely wants it. The Palestinian Authority wants it too, so those center-left actors in Israel beg the state to empower it rather than humiliate it.
