“Lazy Afternoon” by Pete La Roca (1965)

https://songwhip.com/petelaroca/lazy-afternoon

Early morning quiet, and this track suits quite nicely.

The debut album by drummer as a bandleader.

The track seems to float on the ether, subtly shifting and changing through the beautiful interplay among the band, Joe Henderson on sax, Steve Swallow on bass, Steve Kuhn on piano and, of course, La Roca on drums.

According to Steve Swallow, Pete LaRoca and he had dropped acid before going to Rudy Van Gelder’s studio to record this album. Swallow recalled being transfixed by the blue water in RVG's toilet. More at https://jazztimes.com/features/columns/steve-swallow-pete-la-roca/

I've heard this story before. Apparently, Rudy was on the verge of losing his patience with the band's experimentation, and came close to canceling the date.

Glad that didn't happen!
