i wish I could visit alternate universe where some of the most destructive conspiracy theorists just wrote science fiction instead. I want to scream sometimes— if you have a neat idea and know you probably can’t back it up because it’s too advanced or probably not true… just write fiction! You don’t need to lie! Tell a story! It might even be fun!

@futurebird Be careful what you wish for, that's how you get L Ron Hubbard!

@fifilamoura He did it the opposite way. He realized that more money could be made from inventing a religion that would feed off the wealthy than any of his stories. IMO he only wrote one decent book, Battlefield Earth. After enjoying that novel as a kid I moved on to his Mission Earth series and barely finished the first one it was so bad.

And yes, Battlefield Earth isn't perfect, it's dated just like any of the older works of fiction in its writing. But the general story and specific details within are fascinating, and the reason the movie (that I've never seen) did bad was because it didn't just tell the book story, but tried its own interpretation and style. That failed. Or so I hear.
