I genuinely think that books like To Kill a Mockingbird and Little House on the Prairie are so popular, because they represent a world where you can have a father that is loving, emotionally stable, and just.

@RickiTarr Um, I don't think Charles Ingalls was all that. He dragged his wife and small children on the pioneer trail because it suited him to, and in the first book Laura gets whipped with a strap. She's about four at the time.
