Checking in on the very small bog I planted mid-August. The first pic is what it looks like now, the last one is just after making it. There is a lot going on in there that I tried to show a bit with the center pics. Drosera (Sundew) seedlings have sprouted from flower stalks I tossed in there just to see what would happen and some of them are growing on the moss. For watering I just kind of flood it every few days, they seem to like that.
@chillicampari@plants omg bog bins! I’ve got some indoor ones in varying condition. The outdoor ones are doing better but too hard to photo in the dark.
@chillicampari@plants thanks! They are definitely a work in progress. But I love having them around especially in winter (sone plants tolerate skipping winter and others don’t).
I haven’t had much luck with sphagnum yet. Maybe the ones here do need to freeze. I am trying some in my outdoor bins too.
@guidedbywire Yep. Sphagnum seems both "easy" yet tricky (I just started with it this year). Like- it can take things (absorb minerals, tannins, etc.) up to a point and still look healthy for a while, and then suddenly collapse, turn black and die at the growth points. That is interesting about dormancy and I'm curious too if it helps with the type I have (outdoor grown controlled cultivation from central Europe according to the seller).
@chillicampari@plants I only give them rainwater but I think I also struggle with them drying out if the container isn’t covered or else rotting if it is covered. Funny they are so picky because they are everywhere in wetlands here
@plants usually you wouldn't want to flood Pinguicula/Butterworts but these were always different than the others I have and usually looked dry and unhappy, so I wanted to see if they liked different conditions and so far they seem to.
