Giving things time is the key management activity we do on our

But while we can't beat time we can optimize some circumstances.

One example: leaving fallen* trees in place helps kickstart natural decaying processes. This gives room for species that aren't found in a pure production growth.

*some with help 😉🌲🌳

It's interesting to see how in just a couple of years species diversity has significantly grown with a handful of these basic changes in management.

Large tree that blew over in a storm in 2022. It's there to stay.
Root trunk and main trunk of a large pine that fell during a 2021 winter storm. It's still very dry so doesn't have a lot of stuff growing in it. The outside is already home to some stuff
Old log, probably from the 2010 partial clearcut before we owned the land. Among other things there's a bunch of woody fungi growing on it.

Another sign of an improving #woodland ecosystem: tasty #mushrooms!

Just found about a dozen of these puffballs (Lycoperdon perlatum). Very common but somehow the larger ones are not often in an edible state.
