A popular argument that explains the existence of fake healers is that health care is too expensive, which is why most people gravitate towards it. That kinda makes sense, but you also have “outliers” (like my dad and a few other people I know) that believes in it despite being able to afford check ups and operations. Pag sumakit ulo niya he always thinks kinukulam siya and need to seek an albularyo.

Then you also have Gina Lopez that famously turned down conventional cancer treatment (that she could easily afford) in favor of snake oil and Gerson therapy.

Di ko alam sa inyo, pero meron kasabihan sa aming, “Wala namang mawawala kung susubukan.” Ayun kahit sakit, di nawala.

Di ko alam kung ano advice ng mga MD kay Gina or yung chances of survival nya. Pero kung sasabihin ng doktor na you’ll have 50% chance of survival based on studies sa treatment at 98% chances na malulugas buhok mo, tapos may alternative healer na magsasabi na gagaling ka sa treatment nila at may anecdotal evidences ng mga gumaling pero walang masabing chances of survival kasi walang ginawang study, ano itatry mo?
