Is my mother bipolar?

Like I don’t understand why she act so nice sometimes, then 5 minutes later become a horrible monster, then half an hour later, she calms down and seems nice again? Like I swear I feel like I’m (metaphorically) constantly shifting through different timelines and sometimes I exist in a timeline where she’s nice, sometime I exist in a timeline where she’s evil. Why does she change mood so quickly? Is that what bipolar is? Has anyone ever have experience with these people?

Look into cluster b personality disorders and cptsd. This behavior sounds like "splitting."

I'm not a mental health professional, but lived with someone who was later diagnosed CPTSD, so I ended up doing a bunch of homework on wtf was going on.

108beads,

It’s definitely not “normal,” certainly not healthy. As to what—could be symptoms of many different possible underlying causes.

ScaredDuck,

I’m not a qualified professional, but from what I’ve read over the years bipolar disorder mood swings last at least a few days and definitely not minutes. It might be some kind of a personality disorder, in which case therapy can help immensely.

SJ0,

It would really depend on the diagnosis of a clinician, anything is definitely just conjecture.

Bipolar is often more like periods of high energy and periods of low energy as I understand it.

The swings between ideation and demonization is a trait of borderline personality disorder, however, and one that I have experienced first-hand with an ex. The way I’ve had it explained to me is that where sociopathy is an inability to regulate your behavior, BPD is an inability to regulate your emotions.
