Alot of assumptions made in this video and it’s attempting to draw causation from simple correlations.

A few good points but alot of conjecture on this one.

IcyToes,

I understand this sub is run by feminists, and fair enough, but is this related to men’s liberation at all? I would assume it would go on a community called feminism, but the whole focussing on negative male traits is the opposite of men’s liberation, surely?

If you want to get through to guys, focus more on content related to what guys would be interested rather than the regular diet of “guys are bad”, as you’ll just push people away who don’t completely agree with you, then you’re just preaching to choir.

Be the men’s issues conversation you want to see in the world. For the most part I just mirror content that is successful on the Reddit menslib sub and crosspost from feminism communities.

IcyToes,

I was the men’s conversation I want to see, by challenging negative content. It was removed on grounds 3 and 4.

“Build upon content in the original post”. If the post does not fit in with the sub, we cannot follow rule 3 without challenging it. By deleting the challenge, you are preventing us following rule 3. I understand moderation, but this is too heavy handed, and you’re just pushing people away. Is this supposed to be a community, or a mod pinboard that consumers respond to?

If I crosspost from reddit, from a subreddit not related to this content, it would rightly be removed, and I think relevance is important. Which it is described as a feminist community, it is about men’s lib and should be relevant to that.

spaduf,

Rule 3 is longer than that. It also states:

Be proactive in forming a productive discussion. Constructive criticism of our community is fine, but if you mainly criticize our approach, feminism, or other people’s efforts to solve gender issues, your post/comment will be removed.

Regardless rule 4 provides plenty of justification for removing these posts. Your argument seems to be that the topic “How the patriarchy contributes to climate chaos” is inappropriate for this community. If that is the case I think you have deeply misunderstood what this community is for. If you are otherwise taking offense to the title of the video I would like to point you to our stance on clickbait titles. In this case I have already editorialized the title to be more reflective of the video’s content. If you are very concerned by a lack of positive masculinity stories I think you should consider posting some, but I caution you not to include these sorts of criticisms about unrelated posts as that would violate rule 3.

Phoenixbouncing,

Summery for those interested:

  • Francis Bacon called for scientific control over nature to exploit it.
  • Patriarchal masculinities pervade politics and action surrounding climate crisis and capitalist extraction.
  • We need to consider what might be driving us recklessly over the edge in the environmental crisis.
  • Patriarchy is a political-social system that insists on male dominance.
  • The structural and cultural system of gender leads us down the path of environmental destruction.
  • Anyone, not just cisgender men, can be wedded to patriarchal thinking and action.
  • Under our patriarchal system, there is a prevailing vision of what manhood should be, called hegemonic masculinity.
  • Traits like overconfidence, dominance, aloneness, disconnection, anger, and strength are core to what it means to “be a man” under patriarchy.

The video explores the role of patriarchal masculinities in driving the planet to the brink of extinction. The video traces the concept of patriarchy to Francis Bacon’s call for scientific control of nature and highlights how patriarchal thinking has pervaded climate crisis politics and action. The video argues that a structural and cultural system of gender is leading us down the path of environmental destruction, a system that these men buy into, and a system through which they maintain their power. The video also explains the concept of hegemonic masculinity, which is a prevailing vision of what manhood should be, and how traits like overconfidence, dominance, aloneness, disconnection, anger, and strength are core to what it means to “be a man” under patriarchy. The video concludes by discussing how we might forge a world beyond the obstacles of gender.

Bullet Summary:

  • Patriarchal masculinities drive the planet to the brink of extinction
  • Francis Bacon’s call for scientific control of nature foreshadowed patriarchal thinking
  • A structural and cultural system of gender leads us down the path of environmental destruction
  • Hegemonic masculinity is a prevailing vision of what manhood should be
  • Traits like overconfidence, dominance, aloneness, disconnection, anger, and strength are core to what it means to “be a man” under patriarchy
  • We need to forge a world beyond the obstacles of gender.
Phoenixbouncing,

I haven’t taken the time to watch the video, so YMMV with this auto-generated summery.

I’m also not going to comment on the contents of the video before having watched it to avoid any foot in mouth moments.
