Does anyone else feel like Lemmy is getting SO MUCH better?!!
Just sayin’
PSA: You can upload images to a Lemmy instance without anyone knowing
EDIT...
Lemmy's version of Place is so much better than Reddit ( lemmy.ml )
Subscription models for an app that’s not hosting anything is just the dev wanting a constant revenue stream, no matter how they try to word it.
Subscription models only make sense for an app/service that have recurring costs. In the case of Lemmy apps, the instances are the ones with recurring hosting costs, not the apps....
That feeling when you're googling the answer to some technical question, and your own Lemmy post appears 4 results down. ( lemmy.one )
Hopefully this kind of content is ok here. Up until recently, when I would be searching for some kind of technical info, the top (and best) results would usually all be Reddit posts. I was very pleasantly surprised to do that this time and find a Lemmy post instead!...
What does Lemmy lack?
Just wanted to ask: what do you not like in Lemmy (Lemmy as communities, server and clients)?...
Do you feel a sense of loyalty to your instance?
I feel like I’ve formed some sort of faithfulness towards dbzer0 and have a bias towards subs and users of my instance. Anybody else in the same boat?
What are your thoughts on the idea of adding an edit history feature to posts, and comments in Lemmy?
I believe that the addition of an edit history would be a massive boon to the usefulness of Lemmy on the whole. A common problem with forums is the relatively low level of trust that users can have in another’s content. When one has the ability to edit their posts, and comments this invites the possibility of misleading the...
Lemmy Development Update 2023-09-22
Some years ago we used to post weekly development updates to let the community know what we are working on. For some reason we stopped posting these updates, but now we want to continue giving you information every two weeks about the recent development progress. This should allow average users to keep up with development,...
Lemmy Needs Donations!
Between Lemmy.world desperately needing new mod tools, Lemmy.ee disabling image uploads, and the two main Lemmy.ml devs working on Lemmy for less than minimum wage, I want to urge and remind everyone to please Donate!...
Lemmy 0.19 Breaking Changes
We are getting closer to the next major release. This version will have many breaking changes, so we are listing them here for app and client developers to adjust their projects....
would it be simpler for people if we said "server" instead of "instance"?
or maybe some other terminology would be better? lots of people get confused when you ask them to choose an instance, sometimes I think even the word “proxy”, “host”, or “hub” is simpler...
Can we block entire instances?
There are a couple of instances that are clearly misaligned with my values, but they’re very active, so a lot of the communities keep popping up in my feed. I’ve been blocking the communities, but it would be pretty cool if I could just block the entire instance. I know an instance can defederate from another instance. Is...
If the ideal setup is many medium sized instances rather than a few huge ones, wouldn't that mean users would need to subscribe to duplicate communities in all of those instances?
Otherwise, if we have a lot of medium sized instances but the most popular communities are hosted on just a few huge instances, doesn’t that defeat the purpose of distributing load across many instances?...
What I like about lemmy is how often I come across account names and think oh I've interacted with you before.
Familiar faces resurfacing is nice and only possible on a smaller sized platform. Or clicking someones profile only to see a post I previously saw or commemted on.
Politics blocklist ( lemmy.ml )
Just posting my list of filter words on here in case anyone else wants to make their feed politics-free...
What is the plan to deal with CSAM?
There’s another round of CSAM attacks and it’s really disturbing to see those images. It was really bothering to see those and they weren’t taken down immediately. There was even a disgusting shithead in the comments who thought it was funny?? the fuck...
Why is there a lack of gifs/videos on Lemmy?
I partially know the answer to this question…You cannot host videos directly on Lemmy, but that is understandable, video hosting is pretty expensive, but Lemmy also doesn’t support video embeds(videos don’t play within Lemmy), which means that you will have to open the link in a new tab/window to watch it. Which is pretty...
Tired of constantly seeing USA politics and trump face on your feed ? Here's a keyword based blocklist to get rid of them
I got tired of seeing trump face everywhere and a kind user by the name of SubArcticTundra shared his keyword based block list as images. I wrote them down and am sharing them with anyone else that is tired of constantly seeing USA politics on his feed....
lemmy.ml is overloaded, use other instances instead
This site is currently struggling to handle the amount of new users. I have already upgraded the server, but it will go down regardless if half of Reddit tries to join....
How much are link aggregator platforms struggling with the quality of the "general internet"?
It struck me recently that as the quality of content on the internet has arguably gone to shit, in the form of increasingly frequent ads plastered everywhere, paywalls or superficial/dumb blog posts or mainstream media articles, the basic idea of a link aggregator platform can naturally lose its quality, or struggle to maintain...
Is it possible Lemmy's API changes the way reddits did?
I don’t mean the recent selling API rights at absurd costs but when they went from open sourcish to closed.
How resource intensive is the federation part of running a lemmy server?
I ask generally out of curiosity. I was just thinking that as big social media fractures, old school isolated forums might become “cool again”, and that one of the achievements of lemmy might be as a nice platform for simply running a forum for whatever community you want all without needing to worry about federation....
Lemmy 0.19.0-rc.5 and Development Update 2023-11-17
Here is our regular update that explains what we have been working on for the past two weeks. This should allow average users to keep up with development, without reading Github comments or knowing how to program....
