LeftRedditOnJul1, in Some nice views on my way to a cache

Wow, gorgeous! Would love to explore that part of the world someday

Tot, in I found a 21 year old cache today. Nothing like reading original logs written in 2002!
@Tot@lemmy.world avatar

That’s pretty cool! How do you think it has lasted out there for so long?

LeftRedditOnJul1,

Yeah, I was pretty surprised myself… this was near a camping ground too, so a pretty frequented place. I suppose it might have just been re-hidden badly by a recent finder

FigMcLargeHuge, (edited ) in Totally forgot about geocaching until I saw this community

Same here. Just logged back into geocaching and see that they still have caches you have to pay to see. Bummer.

Forgot it was this weekend. Thanks for the reminder!

Chickenstalker, in I found a 21 year old cache today. Nothing like reading original logs written in 2002!

2002 is only 11 years ago…

Imbaster, in Embroider your name for logging
LeftRedditOnJul1, in Embroider your name for logging

Wow, that’s a really unique idea! I’d probably be very challenged to produce anything legible for myself, but I like it!

LeftRedditOnJul1, in Where are the missing DNFs? – Official Blog

I will pretty much always log a DNF if I feel like I gave it a concerted effort – only reason not to log might be if there was muggles at GZ, or I was in too much of a rush to actually search. I do have some friends who don’t log them – I don’t entirely understand their reasoning, I think having a blue dot on their map just annoys them. But I feel the same way, I’d rather have a record of what’s been attempted vs. not. I’m impressed that HQ took such pains to look into people’s behaviour, though! That was an interesting “study” to read

Shjosan,

Wonder if anything can be done about it to encourage people to actually log a DNF. I have seen COs that don’t want anything other then found logs on their caches. Think that makes it harder to log a DNF if encountered, especially newer finders.

I want any kind of log on the caches I placed, whether that be a found/DNF, a note, or even a NM, even if I don’t always agree with it. At least I know people actually visits the caches and I know if there are any problems with it.

LeftRedditOnJul1,

Yup, definitely! Maybe some sort of award for how many DNFs a person has avenged? Or an official stat? I feel like that would be a strong motivator for some. There must a challenge cache out somewhere for that?

LeftRedditOnJul1, in Did anyone from this community attend the 20th anniversary celebration in Seattle?

I drove down there from north of the border for the weekend. Spent some time exploring Seattle, finding a bunch of really creative gadget caches, and generally hanging out with some good geo-friends. I was quite impressed by how far some people travelled in order to attend. I think it’s still one of my fondest memories of 2022!

thecitywelivein,

The ones that drove a long way, are those RV type people? I picture people in their 50s in their Winnebago hitting every state.

LeftRedditOnJul1,

Yup, lots of road trippers for sure

mruczek, in Spot the geocache in this panorama pic

I managed to find it in the picture 😁

LeftRedditOnJul1, in Final Wheel of Challenges souvenirs announced

I was a bit surprised at this announcement because it seems so much like a repeat of the first souvenirs (also a leaderboard challenge), I guess I was expecting something more unique to finish this event off.

At least it seems the maximum for the hard souvenir would be 40 finds needed, which seems easier than past ones they’ve done

Swim, in Found this very subtle fake bolt cache today

What was in it ?

Phlogiston,

Just a log sheet rolled up very tightly, that’s all there was space for. The second picture shows it opened up

mkhopper, in Found this very subtle fake bolt cache today

Wow, that is done really well. How long did it take to finally notice it?

My favorite camouflaged cache was a hollowed out tree limb that had been attached to a metal stake which was placed in a forest around other sticks and leaves. I only found it because I accidently kicked it.

Phlogiston,

I got very lucky on this, and arrived just as two other cachers were pulling it from its hiding spot. I’m sure I would have been looking for a long time if not for them!

That cache sounds really hard as well!

Squeezer, in Found this very subtle fake bolt cache today

We’ve got one like this near us, but on a green painted fence. Took ages to find, the children had absolutely lost the will to live by the time we eventually got it! Really cool though, a bit of a challenge.

bl4ckblooc, in I earned this beautiful coin by completing a Geotour

Are those given out by the government/parks Canada? All I see on the link is that it’s currently in the hands of the owner

Phlogiston,

Yup! The Gulf Islands National Park Reserve (part of Parks Canada) has them at their office in Sidney, BC and will give them out if you show them a completed Geotour passport
