bishopolis, in At the heart of Canada's rush towards liquified natural gas, Kitimat, B.C., is poised to boom | CBC News

Are we still calling LNG a ‘green’ fuel? Is fracking still a big deal, given the impending water crisis?

zephyreks,

LNG is greener than coal, so I guess so?

corsicanguppy,

That bar is so low that even Futurama’s Hermes couldn’t limbo under it. ;-)

Is “not the dumbest idea ever” enough to justify the continued both-feet investment into its extraction and export for cash?

grte, in Canada's first-ever renewable diesel refinery has been built in Prince George, B.C., province says | CBC News

If you had the same question about the headline that I did:

Renewable diesel is the term given to a biomass-based fuel that is chemically equivalent to petroleum diesel. This means it can be transported directly in petroleum pipelines or sold at retail stations without any infrastructure modifications or fuel blending.

Renewable diesel can be made from vegetable oil, animal fats, used cooking oil or even algae.

I don’t feel great about this. I guess it technically counts as renewable, but aren’t we still burning and expelling carbon into the atmosphere?

Loet,

Yeah it sounds like greenwashing.

usualsuspect191, in British Columbians made record-breaking number of 911 calls in May, says operator | CBC News

Hasn’t there been some research that hot weather makes people more aggressive? I wonder if that would translate to making them more likely to go through calling 911

Pyr_Pressure,

There was an article not too long ago about an increase in accidental 911 calls due to increase in smart phone usage and wearable smart watches which can also accidentally call 911.

adespoton, in B.C.'s last Martin Mars water bomber could be headed to Victoria museum

I was wondering why it wasn’t being used on the Highway 4 fire when it used to live at Sproat Lake, just a few km away. Now I know.

Have we completely switched to helicopters now?

TheWaterGod,

I’m no expert on water bombers, but I wonder if the heavier use of helicopters has to do with the ease of getting water? As I understand it, water bombers need a pretty sizable body of water to do their thing and that’s not always available (or if it is, it could be a longer flight away).

adespoton,

Probably; that bomber used to fill up at Sproat Lake and then respond to fires all over Vancouver Island and the inner islands. It had amazing range, but after each dump it would have to fly all the way to a large freshwater lake with a clear central filling lane.

I remember when I was young hearing stories of someone hiking Strathcona Park and finding snorkel and flippers in an old burn, but that’s technically impossible with the Martin Mars configuration. Makes a good story though.
