These two vintage books have gotten a lot of attention at the shop in recent days. Each a classic from different times. Catalysts?
For one, an idyllic old-world tale, seasonal ice-skating is open at Dayton's Riverscape. The other is a tale of survival in a world gone mad. Together, they represent the disparate interests you might find here.
Currently swooning over Myriam Gurba's Creep. Fantastic essays that wander and pull on all sorts of threads, reweaving as they go. The complicated takedown of Joan Didion's California racial grammar in "White Onion" is just one of many highlights so far. @bookstodon

92 A Monster Calls, Patrick Ness
I don't know that I can do this justice. This is an excellent depiction of how complicated people, emotions and grief can be. It gets right to the dichotomy that you may want the person to not die, but you also don't want them to carry on living in their current state; it's too painful, even though you know what comes next will also be painful. It got right to me. For anyone who has ever lost someone and for those that might do so. #books@bookstodon
91 Monstrous Regiment, Terry Pratchett
Re-read. The trouble with re-reading is that you know the twist in the tale and this, therefore, loses some of its tension and anticipation. It's still a fun read, but the first time's the charm here. #books@bookstodon
Chapter 3 of Moonlight Blade is live. After falling through a strange portal, Luca and Cody stumble upon a world unlike anything they’ve seen before. On top of strange entities like a flying whale, Luca reunites with a certain green bunny.
just trialling a new prescription of monthly multi focals after working with a contact lens specialist following a recent eye test. (Previously, I used dailies, from an older prescription.) So far, so good, though, oddly, better in the afternoon and evening. It was so good to find someone who specializes in contacts and is willing to work through issues with older eyes.
Didn’t know how much I wanted to write this piece until I started…. a lullaby reflecting on the movement — great and small, material and immaterial — of people and objects around the world.
'Every day, we yellowly watch other worlds in which matters of staying, leaving, or making a new home have migrated into political realms, the Stygian domain of warmongers.'
Another exciting #GameStudies book around the corner!
"#Ecogames" brings together chapters by a diverse group of authors to explore the shape, impact, and cultural context of ecocritical engagement in and through #VideoGames. 🌱🌎🎮
Someone on @bookstodon was asking for books of the year. I always struggle with this - remembering, but also, books may have had a profoud meaning for me that I have then absorbed into my understanding.
However, two I will highlight:
Flowers for Algernon.
The Opposite of Butterfly Hunting (currently reading). I will say more on this when I have finished it, but it is quite superb.
