Opinions: What is a movie you genuinely like, that is rated below 60% on rotten tomatoes?

Inspired by the linked XKCD. Using 60% instead of 50% because that’s an easy filter to apply on rottentomatoes.

I’ll go first: I think “Sherlock Holmes: A game of Shadows” was awesome, from the plot to the characters ,and especially how they used screen-play to highlight how Sherlocks head works in these absurd ways.

bobbieboucher,

Beerfest

Techyno,

This is very underrated

squilox,

Hardcore Henry

Odo,

That movie was ridiculous and I loved every second of it. I still think about that insane camera shot from the climax (you know, the split screen…).

and it has Christoph Waltz

Sucker Punch (2011). Seriously underrated.Dont get why many people consider this movie plotless.

I fucking love Sucker Punch! Hardly ever see this one talked about. Highly underrated Zach Snyder film with STUNNING visuals.

Aesthesiaphilia,

I tuned into Sucker Punch while flipping through tv channels one day. It was in the middle, never heard of the movie before, and there was this badass chick killing zombie Nazis with a sword! For like 10 minutes! No context! It was amazing!

Speed 2: cruise control

I know its likely unpopular, even for a list like this, but i find myself genuinely enjoying putting it on. Quite often.

It is an action movie, but it isnt all dark & gloomy like so many in the genre. Instead, its bright and sunny. The scenarios genuinely make no sense (ex, door handles apparently dont exist) but the movie still feels fun and entertaining.

BenchwarmerXP,

Dude, 3 ninjas: high noon at mega mountain is an amazing kids movie. Every actor is clearly having so much fun and the plot’s overblown absurdity allows for super fun set piece action sequences.

HessiaNerd,

I’m 70-80% sure I smoked weed with one of the ninjas, it was probably around 2000, or 2001 and in Pasadena. I wanna say somewhere around Del Mar and Sierra Madre. I wanna say it was Max Slade? Years and smoke make the details hazy.

Cool_Name,

I liked Transcendence and I thought it my qualify. 19% from critics, 37% from audiences. Wow, it is over qualified.

Odo,

I wish that movie didn’t spoil itself with its opening scene. They make sure you understand you’re seeing the post-story world first, then jump back to actually tell it. Makes me wonder what it would have been like skipping past that bit, not knowing how it had to end.

_xDEADBEEF,

The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou.

57% on RT but its probably one of my favourite Wes Anderson films.

thepianistfroggollum,

Boondock Saints (Nov 99 is close enough). It’s such a fun movie, but only has a 27%

slackassassin,

Kinda makes me feel like river dancing.

aequitas,

I love this movie so much I got the tattoo (as my username)

thepianistfroggollum,

I mean, how can a movie that has Willam Dafoe in drag be a 27%?

poggerino,

The Super Mario Bros movie. It was really good but for some reason has a 59% rating on the tomato-meter, despite a 95% audience score. Very strange and it’s why I just don’t trust Rotten Tomatoes.

beefbaby182,
@beefbaby182@mastodon.world avatar

@poggerino @thebestaquaman

You talking about the new one, or the old 80's one with John Leguizamo?

poggerino,

The new one

petrol_sniff_king,

I fucking hated that movie, but I will admit it has great vfx.

Throwdownyourgrandma,

Rotten Tomatoes reviews always remind me of that South Park episode where Randy is a Yelp reviewer. It feels like they take themselves way to serious and forget to just enjoy the movie they are watching.

Odo,

The plot was pretty straightforward (though often rushed). I see why critics would roll their eyes at another kids movie that plays it safe like that. It’s not anywhere near the level of a Paddington or Fantastic Mr. Fox.

That said, it wasn’t really trying to be that, and was all I wanted in a Mario movie: show me you respect the franchise, add in a bunch of easter eggs and references, and be at least moderately entertaining. I just hope the eventual sequels and spinoffs aim a tad bit higher.

fritobugger2017,

Both from 1991: Hudson Hawk and Nothing But Trouble

Jacko,

Surfer, Dude. - criminally underrated and a great chill movie. Also, “get outside more” is a great theme. I dig it and wish more people did.

thepianistfroggollum,

It’s one of my favorite movies that no one has ever heard of. It’s basically just Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson being themselves.

Absurdist and slapstick comedies are often a good answer to this question. I would argue that movies like Step Brothers and Wet Hot American Summer have some comic actors doing some of their best work. But people who aren’t a fan of the genre are going to shit on those movies.

Liz,

Step Brothers got a 69% (nice) on rotten tomatoes.

Ghostalmedia,
@Ghostalmedia@lemmy.world avatar

lol. Although critics were 55%

JargonWagon,

Comedy is usually shat on by critics. “Laughs are cheap” and all that.

Odo,

Kung Pow. It’s at 13% from critics. It may not be high art, but c’mon, live a little, critics.

maplealmond,

I remember liking Paycheck when I saw it in theaters.

ramsgrl909,

Eli, was a fun scary movie. Not sure where all the hate comes from
