NT Friends & colleagues have often told me that my autistic super-hearing must be “awesome” and “useful”

No.

Hearing gnats mate & every sound within 50 meters of me simultaneously is incredibly painful, debilitating, and annoying AF.

And no, “just put in Loops” isn’t useful.

Glad someone mentioned this! There are definitely pros and cons to the autistic super hearing.

In my case, every possible detail within an open office environment can be quite distracting and even stressful.

On the flip side, the super hearing is amazing for sound design and recording music. Also, when I was an EMT, I could grab accurate vital signs from a patient with the cheap $7 stethoscope in the back of a moving ambulance. Every time.

For perspective, these stethoscopes are such poor quality the engine and road noise were more audible than the muffled vital signs.

@peteorrall @theautisticcoach @actuallyautistic Yes, pros and cons for sure I have to wear noise cancelling headphones all day, most days.

Buuuut, I do wonder if the incredible experience I have with music and sound in media would be lessened if my auditory system were not so sensitive.

"What's your superpower?"

"I'm immune to glares."

"Wow! That must be useful."

"Sure! It was very useful for destroying my marriage when my ex-wife glared at me, and I did not detect it, and then she blamed me for ignoring her."
