An autistic person not wanting to be touched is not a problem to be solved.

Your offence taken at the person not wanting to be touched is the problem.

@AutisticAdam @Tooden @actuallyautistic You’d think it’d be a basic rule for everyone.

I grew up in a family that wasn’t physical. To this day I don’t like being hugged or touched uninvited. If that bothers someone, that’s their issue. It doesn’t bother me anymore.

@Jack @AutisticAdam @actuallyautistic I have several friends who are touch-averse. It's simply an extension of courtesy to me. I don't automatically hug anyone who hasn't said or indicated that they themselves like to be hugged BY ME, not in general. It's very specific for some people, re person or timing or even location. It's not about me it's about someone else. I think that's where a lot of people go wrong, thinking it's personal.

@Lizette603_23 @Jack @AutisticAdam @actuallyautistic COVID was a blessing for me in that now I feel absolutely no shame about not shaking hands or hugging. You get a fist-bump or nothing at all.

RolloTreadway,
@RolloTreadway@neurodifferent.me avatar

@roknrol @Lizette603_23 @Jack @AutisticAdam @actuallyautistic I cannot stand shaking hands, and I know I'm far from alone in that.

Sure, I recognise that some people do like it. Fine, good for them. But that doesn't give them the right to inflict a handshake on anybody else, and it's absurd to suggest that handshakes are universally correct and consented to.

Pretend to sneeze right as someone extends their hand.

Just coughing into your hand should be enough.

@Lizette603_23 @Jack @AutisticAdam @actuallyautistic not a hugger or a hand shaker. Covid was strangely a good thing for me in that regard. There are waaaaayyy to many huggers in the South…and have you seen DeathSantis rubbing his nose then shaking hands with people? 🤮🤢

Crimes, as if he was disgusting enough already.

@Jack @Lizette603_23 @AutisticAdam @actuallyautistic love the one where he pays the person in the wheelchair on the shoulder…yeah spread that snot around more Deathsantis💀

Man has no class. I’d never wipe my nose on DeSantis. I might scratch my butt then shake his hand, though.

It appears autocorrect isn’t familiar with “cripes”.

johnettesnuggs,

@Jack @Lizette603_23 @AutisticAdam @actuallyautistic crimes, cripes…meh my autocorrect still thinks I’m typing “duck”….and it’s never duck.

Go with the flow. I once told an ex of mine that in a hundred years, our swears are going to be duck, ducking, etc. :madjoy:

@AutisticAdam @actuallyautistic I have learned from an autistic niece, never to touch anyone without explicit consent. It’s the right thing to do.

I have Aspergers and I talked about this exact topic with my now ex wife some years ago.

I struggled with touch so much

Still do

Have a listen tell me if this aligns to your experience

On this I must be slightly closer to baseline. I welcome touch, but only from people I know well and trust. That's a very small list. With people I don't know, I can endure it, for a short time. With people I know but don't trust, it's torture.

@ScottSoCal @AutisticAdam @actuallyautistic I couldn't stand being touched for a very long time

I think my body knew my ex was the wrong person
