Kbin Cafe Is Now Using Cloudflare

Kbin Cafe is now using Cloudflare for content delivery. This should speed the website up by a small margin, especially for those far away from our server location (Virginia, U.S.).

Please report any issues that may crop up! I haven't tested every scenario, so it's always possible something may have been overlooked in the transfer.

Happy posting.

Thanks for the update!

I'm a little unsure now, because @feditips told me a few days ago, that Cloudflare even messes with federation and for example kbin.social was only using it as an interim solution. Do You know what this is about?

@kfynh @barista

I think the Kbin admin said they might be able to reconfigure it so that it didn't stop federation, but they needed time to find out.

A lot of people are uncomfortable with Cloudflare's privacy though, but that's a separate issue.

Thanks for clarifying!

"A lot of people are uncomfortable with Cloudflare's privacy though, but that's a separate issue."

That would have been my next question actually. :/

Actually, federation doesn't seem to have completly stopped anyway, since we are talking to each other on different platforms. Also, there are new threads and posts from other instances or other software popping up constantly.
So in which way is it told to be messing with federation then? I'm really just curious. :D

@ernest maybe you could help? :)

barista,

I've been trying to optimize for the potential influx of people moving off of Reddit in the coming days, and this was one of the steps I took. I doubt Cloudflare will remain permanent, especially with the above concerns in mind.

When I moved us, I also updated our Privacy Policy detailing the use of Cloudflare.

Either way, I haven't seen any underlying federation issues, just slowness in receiving all activity on a post, which has been a hallmark of a lot of servers lately with the Lemmy 0.18 bug and Kbin.social queues being inundated.

I'll continue to keep an eye on the situation and adjust as necessary. Disabling the CDN is only a flip-switch in our domain registrar. ;)

Thank You for your further explanation! That's good to hear, espacially the part that it's not permanent! :)

Yes, I cannot see any federation issues as well, since cloudflare has been enabled, except for the ones that have been there before that probably have to do with the Lemmy 0.18 bug. I was really just curious, because I my last info was about Cloudflare messing with federation.

Again thank you for respecting the concerns and being transparent about them. :)
