If you're looking for a drastic solution, consider a loft bed. You could have a narrow stair case or ladder up to your bed, and beneath the bed frame, you could have a space for a desk and personal office or a couch/loveseat and a little entertainment center.
My current living situation is quite small, but I don't have vaulted ceilings anymore to consider doing a loft bed, myself!
