Wiki link goes elsewhere. But when I read the summary above it sounded a lot like Hotel Coolgardie. So I looked up the RH wiki article; yup, inspired by that doc.
I was thinking exactly the same! But couldn’t remember the name of it, so my thoughts were along the lines of "Wasn’t this a documentary? Wasn’t this released earlier then 2023? Pretty sure the girls involved were from northern Europe?
Have a feeling that Hotel Coolgardie will actually be much more interesting viewing to many of the target audience of this new movie. So many uncomfortable and semi-surreal moments. Available on Prime in Australia, so possibly is also on US Prime, for those interested.
Not bad, the visuals were astounding, story wise it’s Avatar/Pocahontas but with AI instead of blue dudes/natives, the Middle East and 9/11 parallel was very clear, maybe too clear (>!I’ll save you from American!<),
The CGI and costume looked rough to my eyes, but I gave it more slack afterwards when I found out this was originally slated to be an HBOmax release. The superhero aspects also felt a little played out and dragged a little, but nothing that was an active detriment to the movie
Where the movie really shines, though, is the family. They are the heart of the movie and have phenomenal chemistry. I’m glad they’re carrying over to the James Gunn universe, as it would have been a waste of elephantine proportion to lose this cast. As a quick aside, I wish we got a little more of the dad and a little less of a George Lopez, but their overall dynamic was still great.
My biggest issue with the movie, though: not enough Harvey Guillén! He’s great in What We Do in the Shadows and when I saw him on screen, I was anticipating him to steal the show in Blue Beetle. Unfortunately, he did not get nearly as much attention as I’d hoped; but I pray he’ll somehow return for the next one (though I doubt it).
Yep the first three rows at my local (fake) IMAX are flat and all.pretty similar next straining look up at screen so might as well get the leg room and less restricted view.
Yeah I’ll echo what everyone else is saying, the visuals and art direction are stellar, some of the best original sci-fi art in the last decade, rivaling Dune and Avatar - the story is as generic of an action movie as you can get. It’s a fun movie tho, I enjoyed my watch, but it’s not a “run out and see” kinda movie unless you’re a VFX nerd like me.
