I actually enjoyed A. I. and Bicentennial Man very much. There was some interesting and thought provoking stuff in that decade. Also, Contact. Not the book, but Hollywood’s gonna Hollywood.
For folks who have never seen it I like the episode with Sally Sparrow. Since you said re-watch… I m thinking of making a game of watching new who episodes and trying to spot the references, going back and watching the corresponding classic series. Mix it up a bit
You must ABSOLUTELY start with Series 1, Serial 4 - Marco Polo.
The show by that time has really found its footing. Without seeing that, none of the rest makes sense, so it’s not even worth bothering. Don’t settle for the audio or book versions, it’s video or nothing.
Oof - I'm quite happy with recons but for some that would be a tough call... :p
Also you'd miss out on the first Dalek adventure. It's not the best maybe but it's probably the story that saved the show and gave it mainstream appeal.
I am a big fan of 60s historicals though and Marco Polo is where the first TARDIS crew feel like a unit.
I mean my options as a fan growing up in the wilderness years was basically whatever I had on video/whatever I could borrow or copy off someone else.
And my options now as a father are quite limited to 'does it have Daleks/Cybermen in?' That said he watched Midnight recently. He thought it was really funny.
What is the metric for "greatest sci-fi directors of all time"? It sounds like they're just comparing the most successful old scifi movies. I have a soft spot for some older sci-fi movies, but most old sci-fi film is incredibly corny and not worth wasting time on.
The best sci-fi doesn't come in a single hour and half long film - it comes from season long story archs with several integrating sub plots.
I know there are a lot of gen-X and older out there that like to argue for the self-contained world of episodic Trek, but that format needs to die. It's boring.
Oooof. IMO this list is not correctly ranked at all… how can lost, stranger things, etc. be top 10??? They got a lot of the correct series in the top 40 I guess, but the ranking is awful
Is there a way we could poll this in the community to get a better ranking?
Regarding the anti-cringe cut: I might have to give that a shot. Thanks! I tried a Hobbit fan edit recently that was really very well done - but still felt… well… forced. It’s maybe impossible to capture the Hobbit book vibe using those three movies as the source material.
I see Rings of Power the same way as I do the Star Wars sequel trilogy in that it has some good parts, but it is ultimately mediocre and I’ll likely never watch it a second time. Outside of dwarves, I found it to be rather underwhelming. With that said, I can appreciate the effort many out into it although I found it to be ultimately rather meh.
I thought it was wonderful. There were a few moments were the dialog was like “hmm” but for the most part it was amazing. There are a lot of details…I liked it.
I agree with all of these but Barbarella. It’s hard to say it’s underrated when it’s such a huge cult classic. Duran Duran is even named after the villain.
TLDR: Season 2 still in production and the team are still actively trying to find a new home for it.
I guess there is still hope then that if season 2 does well we could still get more seasons. A bit like The Expanse or Futurama it could rise from the ashes of Paramount to be reborn anew.
