Yesterday Elon Musk told advertisers to go fuck themselves and threatened to send his mob after them if they pull their ads from Twitter/X.

Over the years, he built a reality where he was a genius who could never be wrong. But as his fantasy collides with the real world, Musk is melting down — and has the power to make us all feel the pain as he crashes back to Earth.

Regular reminder that if you are giving someone feedback on their work, be kind and try to find at least one positive thing to tell them about it. That goes for trainees, authors of manuscripts you are reviewing, and even senior colleagues you think probably don't need a pat on the back. @academicchatter

Interesting explanation about what really went wrong with Optus last week.

The short version: it looks like Optus doesn't control its own core network. Its parent company Singapore Telecom does. Optus just resells it.

Which is why Optis' CEO was so vague about what the issue actually was: she was protecting her bosses in Singapore.

So far, I am pretty impressed by the simplicity of fastly.

I am contemplating a major refactoring that is focused on performance. I believe I will consolidate down from the 13 servers today to 4 larger servers colocated on a 10gbps network, and moving back to a local minio storage provider.

The 16 core DB server is regularly saturating, so will likely go with one of the 64 core sapphire rapids servers for that and redis, and another for puma.

Fastly seems like a much better solution than setting up a bunch of nginx reverse proxies around the world, and so far it seems to be working really well.

@jerry
Any guesses on how much performance advantage / how many fewer servers could be used if the codebase was written in, say, a compiled language?
