Now that I have a brand new guitar that I love, I'm struggling to fight the ADHD urge to hyperfocus on a hobby by buying a crappy guitar that I don't need and replacing everything about it that I don't like until I have something unique that I do like. I have neither time, nor money, nor space for this. That unfortunately hasn't kept me from daydreaming and researching about it. Still, it's not much of a complaint seeing as I'm still so very much enjoying this PRS.

Just pulled a box from the e-waste bin that has PS/2 and 9-pin serial ports. If it boots, we'll see if or can give it a new purpose.

There isn't a software license in existence that can force a company to always behave ethnically and act in good faith with its users. You can, however, vote with your dollars or your advocation within your own company to fund and contribute to companies and projects that have earned and continue to earn your good faith and to speak up when your own company is considering violating that good faith with its users.

If someone is packaging software and not aware of the license change, and your company uses that downstream software that now pulls in the BUSL code, and your company competes with Hashicorp in some conceivable way (deploys VMs, stores passwords, builds images), is your company now in violation and liable even if the vendor you got it from still has a (now-incompatible) MPL license in their repo? The audits of this are not going to be fun.

vwbusguy,
@vwbusguy@mastodon.online avatar

Can you now even legally publish a Docker Container on Docker Hub that contains Terraform in it? Are you possibly competing in some way by doing that. If a container you're using embeds a BUSL Terraform from an upstream source, are you liable for deploying something with it that might compete with Hashicorp in some way? Is deploying Jenkins or Ansible with Terraform now technically against the license?

vwbusguy,
@vwbusguy@mastodon.online avatar

@rogersherman As of last night, there is no longer an "open source Terraform".

vwbusguy,
@vwbusguy@mastodon.online avatar

@rogersherman So as long as your business or hobbyist product you've hacked together for fun doesn't store secrets, deploys stuff in cloud environments, builds or deploys virtual machines or applications that run on them, or analyzes networks, you should be fine, right?

Red Hat considered AlmaLinux, who is a registered non-profit, a competitor to RHEL. The license is vaguely worded enough that it's up to Hashicorp to seemingly decide what they see as a competitive threat.

Anyone else remember how company adopting the "Business Source License" for MaxScale made MaxScale and the company super-profitable? No one? Oh yeah, that's because it didn't.

For the record, the database itself is governed by the MariaDB Foundation, not the company. The Foundation rejected the BUSL and the database has stayed under the GPL this whole time. The database and Foundation are doing very well, while the company by the same name that pulled the BUSL shenanigans is not.

vwbusguy,
@vwbusguy@mastodon.online avatar

"The BSL license has no effect on the MariaDB Server, which will stay GPLv2 forever. The BSL is not used by the Foundation and everything the Foundation staff contributes to is fully open source."

-The MariaDB Foundation statement at the time

My point is not to convince anyone to stop using - definitely do - it's absolutely awesome and . It happens to be awesome because it is owned by a Foundation that guarded it against the Company doing exactly what just did. I also can't think of a reason why won't enjoy similar outcomes to MariaDB Company. Hopefully, the common tools (Terraform, Vault) will get forked and maintained by a Foundation. The company is screwed. It's only a matter of time.

vwbusguy,
@vwbusguy@mastodon.online avatar

@squalouJenkins Terraform and Vault at least greatly depend on those cloud vendors for those tools to be basically useful and exist. I don't see how this motivates Google, Amazin, Microsoft, VMWare, etc., to continue to support providers for Terraform and Vault under this new licensing. Arguably, Hashicorp had been making its money on the backs of the cloud providers just as much if not more than the open source developers.

Why are some RCS chats not encrypted?

vwbusguy,

@chimera Because iPhone still doesn't support RCS

@chimera Maybe she has an old Android phone with a pre-2021 Messages app from older firmware?

Here's some hard truth about C - It's not going away. It's not that it's perfect, but it is immensely portable and useful. More importantly, no other language has come close to its ubiquity. I'm not saying other languages don't do some things better (they definitely do!), but we're going to be stuck with C for a while yet.

If you are a user, as a caveat emptor, despite advertising Linux support for the 6 Professional , they do not support Linux (or MacOS) for firmware updates.

From support:
"The firmware updater can only be run from a Windows computer or VM. I'm sorry we do not have an installer program that will run on a Linux distro."

This doesn't mean it won't work out of box, but you won't have access to bug fixes that might impact you.
