After the last mega post, someone mentioned feathers as the next topic. I was amazed at the response the first write up got, so here we are again. Just a reminder, I’m not any kind of expert, so ask this is from a couple days of Internet research. If you feel I’ve posted something incorrect, let me know. Otherwise, I hope...
This is super interesting, just like the feet! I had no idea that feathers served so many different functions. Thank you for this post and also for curating the links. That takes a lot of time!
I did! I agree, the video is a great illustration of the info here. Social media is pretty random, hope you keep learning and sharing for your own enjoyment :)
This post is half a test for me to see how Lemmy is currently handling video and gif, but this also gives a nice visualization of a few of the major points of my big feather article I’ll post tonight or tomorrow....
In Jerboa it also opens in an outside link, which is one reason I’m not partial to videos. But seeing those feathers not move and (not) hearing the sound of the owls flight would be hard to replicate in text. Great video!
This is amaaaazzzing! Thank you so much for all the research, clear summaries, and links. I had no idea that owls’ feet were so specialized and different from other birds. I’ve learned a lot! Going to bookmark this keep rereading to absorb all the things.
While it’s true that the person who ‘owns’ the number will get points from whatever you buy, this is still very useful in those stores (increasingly many, anecdotally) where the price is a lot lower at checkout when you have a card or associated phone number. ‘Discounts’, I.e. un-jacked up prices, only available when you sell your data.
Wait, is this a mushroom or a coral? Perhaps like some other lurking upvoters, I am not actively growing or finding but do enjoy learning from the posts here. Thanks for sharing!
Did some digging online and the secret is a dish of moist O²-rich soil inside a loosely sealed clear tote. The clear tote lets the leaves photosynthesize while maintaining a higher than average temp and humidity. Meanwhile the oxygenated soil helps with root production....
I like this daring approach to getting more plants! Also had to look up ‘zombie leaves’ and apparently they are sold as plants by themselves. From an ag extension school in NC::
Some, but not all, plants can be propagated from just a leaf or a section of a leaf. Leaf cuttings of most plants will not generate a new plant; they usually produce only a few roots or just decay. Because leaf cuttings do not include an axillary bud, they can be used only for plants that are capable of forming adventitious buds.
Mango seeds are quite distinctive, so if she remembers planting it but just doesn’t remember the fruit it came from, perhaps it is something other than mango.
lovely! There is a somewhat lonely orchid community at lemmy.ml (c/orchids). I don’t know how to link/crosspost, but if you do, they might appreciate this :)
Houseplants is (I think) the only Mander community where I can’t see posts on Jerboa (or rather can only see 4 posts) though web app works fine, showing pages of posts. Just curious as to why that might be, maybe language setup? Maybe just an idiosyncracy of Jerboa?
That’s a good thought. I went to check, and yes, same account and settings on mobile and web apps. I’ve read when this happens across instances, there are federation issues, but mander is local, and Houseplants is the only mander community with disappearing posts for me. Does this happen for anyone else locally? If not, maybe just another blip in the fediverse ¯_ (ツ) _/¯
Actually, yes, you have solved this, thank you! It was my language setting, and I had somehow selected everything EXCEPT English 😅. Houseplants must be mostly in English while the rest of Mander may be undetermined? Many thanks to you and @tauzero for looking into this :)

My MiL planted a seed from some fruit she had eaten. It kind of looks like a mango to me, but several of the leaves are conjoined. Any ideas?

Is there something different about the way this community was set up?
