Everyone masks in one way or another. It isn't solely an Autistic or neurodivergent thing. However, Autistic and neurodivergent people do mask a lot more.

The thing is, masking doesn't necessarily mean we are behaving more neurotypically. Sometimes we mask by leaning into our Autistic behaviours.

@DivergentDumpsterPhoenix @actuallyautistic That’s a very good point – I do have a tendency to think of masking in a very one-dimensional way, but it’s more complex than that

Does anyone else have sensory issues washing their face?

I’m trying the curology acne treatment because my face has bad acne lately. It comes with a cleanser that you must use 2x daily. Washing my face feels like sensory torture. I’m doing it anyways. Not washing my face or using cleansing wipes is probably what caused the acne.

I was put in swimming lessons for years as a kid but I refused to learn because I didn’t like the feeling of the water on my face.

Relate?

@ashleyspencer @actuallyautistic Confession: I wash my face far less often than most people would expect me to

That’s partly because of sensory issues and partly because I forget

When I used to wash my hair in the shower every day, that was when my face got its daily wash too

Now I only wash my hair about 2 or 3 times a week, and those are the only guaranteed proper face washes I do 😳

I think the main sensory thing for me is a feeling of not being able to breathe: it’s a very stressful part of a shower

I also dislike anything slimy on my face, so I very rarely use moisturisers and almost never wear makeup

I do put sunscreen on during the summer (on days I go outside!), but don’t really like that either
