oxjox, (edited ) to news in Philadelphia journalist who advocated for homeless and LGBTQ+ communities shot and killed at home

These comments are out of control. To be fair though, this AP article is garbage.

The likelihood of this having anything to do with the victim being a queer journalist in Philadelphia is practically zero. Here’s some excerpts from the local paper.

Detectives believe Kruger’s death may have been the result of a domestic dispute or may have been drug-related, according to three law enforcement sources with knowledge of the case. The sources, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss an ongoing investigation, said police investigators recovered troubling text messages between Kruger and a former partner. Investigators also recovered methamphetamine inside Kruger’s bedroom, the sources said.

In recent months, he’d written on social media about a variety of alarming incidents at his home.

In April, he posted that an ex-partner had broken into his home. “The door was locked, so he had somehow obtained a copy of my keys,” he wrote. He had allowed the man, whom he’d known for years “before his troubles,” to stay at his house briefly after being released from jail. He said he was able to deescalate the situation and the man eventually left, and he changed his locks.

In August, someone threw a rock through his home window, he said. Then, about two weeks ago, he wrote on Facebook that someone came to his house searching for their boyfriend — “a man I’ve never met once in my entire life.” The person called themselves “Lady Diabla, the She-Devil of the Streets” and threatened him, he wrote.

“Either the door was open, or the offender knew how to get the door open,” he said. “We just don’t know yet.”

oxjox, to news in U.S. Senate unanimously passes formal dress code after uproar

It seems my exaggerated commentary is a bit above your head. Sorry for attempting to use the internet to spur thought and discussion.

oxjox, to reddit in Deleted my 7 years old Reddit Account today

I was thinking more about the entire content of the instance rather than backing up or migrating a user account. If Lemmy.ml shuts down tomorrow, the content is gone forever, right?

As a public resource, it just seems less stable to me. The instance is funded by the generosity of the users. How sustainable is that? Five years? Ten years? Twenty years or more? How long should we as the internet community expect our data to reside online? Should there be a reasonable expectation that in 20 years we should be able to search for content from 2023? What about doing a research paper today about the early internet? How many “indie” servers shut down prior to 2003?

I don’t have the answer or any exceptions. I’m just wondering if anyone else is thinking about this stuff.

Hold on now, I didn’t say anything about “building” a community. My point was about the ability to engage with an existing community. Ya know… like a town square.

I’m not disagreeing with what you’re saying but from my experience (beginning back before there was even a Twitter app), I did not have exposure to the cesspool so many complain about. Again, for me, it was about getting updates and engaging with people and organizations in my real life local and extended community. So, when the subway is delayed, a road is closed, there’s looting happenig a zip code away, when a council person is running for office or trying to pass legislation, etc., Twitter was the best place to go to get that information. Now, the best I’ve got is my local newspaper, a handful of bot accounts on Mastodon, and RSS feeds.

Granted, I never used the official Twitter app so I was always free from the algorithm and advertising. RIP Tweetbot.

So, unless I’m not understanding it correctly, the instance you’re a member of could possibly not exist tomorrow. The owner of that instance is responsible for managing the server and if they die or fail to make a payment, that instance is dead. Right? It seems to me that the “defederated” part of this isn’t any different than the world wide web. Possibly worse because it’s not corporate owned or backed by a large financier.

We’re interacting on these instances in good faith that the owners will continue to feel like maintaining it. I understand this is extremely unlikely, but logistically, this is how it works, no?

See, even the Senate can’t function without basic regulations. Just because we used to have freedom and decorum for generations, what makes people think an entire society should continue to be free of restriction and regulation? If individuals operate outside the established norms of a community, legislation is adopted to codify those norms.

oxjox, to reddit in Deleted my 7 years old Reddit Account today

Ooooh… so, not “your seven year old’s” account.

Anyway… as a person who searches the internet for answers, Reddit holds many of them. Some of them are wrong answers but some of them are actually helpful. It sucks that everything is consolidated into a handful of resources and people no longer publish their own content on their own sites. It makes for very few organizations holding the keys to “the world’s information”. So when organizations such as DPReview close down and threaten to remove decades of user created content, the community is disadvantaged. Still, I’m not sold on a decentralized system being a solution. The content is still housed on a sever with keys held by individuals. I don’t see how it’s possible for Lemmy to become a crawlable resource when ease of migration is built into the system.

For me, twitter was always about community engagement. It’s where I got updates from my city’s legislators, reporters, businesses, etc. It’s the best news hub. And it was the best platform for communicating with others who share my hobbies and professional interests. Not to mention the real IRL friends I had made through out the years. So, it’s not just a dumpster fire of misinformation and racism and sexism.

I’ve never understood this so maybe you could help. Personally, I rather see ads for things I’m not interested in so I’m not tempted to buy anything. Why would you prefer to be manipulated to buying things?

And, just out of curiosity, where do you fall in the conversation about today’s economy and personal finances? Are you doing well for yourself or are you struggling? Do you have any thoughts on targeted advertising influencing people to be better consumers while they complain about not being able to afford a decent life?

oxjox, to news in California governor signs law requiring gender-neutral bathrooms in schools by 2026

Ah, so more like two years to give rednecks conservatives a heads up that this is happening. That does make some sense.

oxjox, to news in California governor signs law requiring gender-neutral bathrooms in schools by 2026

Under the law, “each school district, county office of education, and charter school” would be required to have at least one gender-neutral bathroom on campus on or before July 1, 2026.

Whut?? Why not just make them all human restrooms? How does it takes two+ years to switch some signage and inform people to use whatever door they wish?

I’ve been living in a city with “gender-neutral” restrooms for so long that I forget what it used to be like. Well, aside from sports and entertainment complexes.

oxjox, to apple_enthusiast in First impressions of watchOS 10?

WatchOS 10 is unusable for me. I sent mine back to revert to OS 9.

The vast majority of my interactions with Apple Watch is swiping to change faces to quickly observe a bunch of data in a glance or to launch apps. With this user interface entirely deleted, it feels to me that they’ve handicapped the OS to a mere shadow of what is has been since this feature was introduced in WatchOS 3.

They should instead add a lock button for the people who are so greatly burdened to have to flick their finger to change from a face they accidentally flipped to.

“Smart Stack” is dumb AF. It looks nice and it’s probably usable if you’re sitting still crouched over your watch but to try to use it while you’ve active is a nightmare. It’s too small, doesn’t show enough information, it’s fluid, lacks permanence, isn’t possible to always be in the order of intention… it’s just a UX bag of turds.

Not a fan of moving Control Center but not the end of the world. It and the previous crown and action button presses were all much more ergonomic as they were.

The Weather app doesn’t make much sense. I imagine I’d get used to it but it’s certainly a downgrade, as is the rest of the OS, in usability.

It’s pretty though. I absolutely admire it for its prettiness. But I’ve lost count of the ways it’s taken a step back in usability. It’s a smart watch. Its primary reason for existing is to present data as clearly and efficiently as possible.

People may have their preferences and subjective feelings about things but WatchOS 10 is objectively more cumbersome to use than WatchOS 9.

What privacy concerns are there with the Outlook app?

oxjox, to asklemmy in Companies that obtain and sell your user information should have to pay you royalties. Agree or disagree?

I’m talking about deleting the FREE Facebook app from your phone and you’re talking about PAID ISPs. You’re not wrong but you’ve changed the conversation to ignore my point…

Company: Sure thing! It’s free but we’re going to take your data and sell it.
Consumer: Okay!
Start by deleting the apps from your phone in favor of the web version. Make sure to decline allowing websites and services to track your usage. It’s not perfect, but it’s a start.

How is deleting FREE apps from your phone and declining to allow websites to track you not a good start and how would this handicap your day-to-day life? My point is that if you’re suing something for free, you are the product. This needs to be at the forefront of people’s minds and they need to be made aware of the ramifications of choosing to use these FREE services.

Granted, I should have been more clear and said “Don’t use FREE things that sell your data”.

Yeah - there’s a lot to be concerned about. Hell yes there’s a huge concern about a PAID service also harvesting your data.
Let’s START by deleting apps off our phones because this is what we currently have the most control over and they’re the one’s harvesting the most kinds of data to sell to brokers.
