"Just stop using YouTube instead of waging an ad blocker blocker war and use other services"

Okay. What services? Peertube? A network with an amount of traffic that is a rounding error compared to YouTube's and has no monetization strategy?

Nebula? The video streaming service that is invite only and which sources new talent to invite specifically from YouTube? The service that has set up a model where it is dependent on YouTube and can only really survive if YT is thriving?

Vimeo? The site that has sent creators of popular videos bills of thousands of dollars for "taking up too much bandwidth?"

Which video streaming service is viable for new and unknown video makers building an audience and established ones who do it for a living and everyone in between? You can't answer that question because no such service currently exists

@eniko

What do we rely on youtube for ?

youtube is a combination of

  • streamers that make money with very good things (they can use twitch maybe?)
  • some rare official musicians channel (don't get why, just for brand ?)
  • an ocean of illegal music/content that's surprising but hey, it's big youtube, once removed you'll find another one loading that same song/concert/video/movie

There is no way you can compete with youtube with a legal small platform for the last two points

for the rest, we can, and i say with the maximum respect, play classical music and put linux tutorial...

This tool lets me monitor the federation traffic from/to my Mastodon instance metalhead.club.

You can clearly see the other server locations - mainly in the US and Europe.

The tool is not ready for the public, but once it's finished and stable, I'll let you know :)

Video is showing a 3D globe in a web browser. Colorful arcs across cities in the globe show active ActivityPub connections.
