Really disappointed that too many of my fellow dutchies voted for right-wing, islamophobic Geert Wilders. I’m actually disgusted. But also not surprised. I didn’t vote. I left 1982. Never planned to return. It’s not my country anymore. Le fucking sigh.

My name is Jan Wildeboer, I own a Brother laser printer that JustPrints(tm) since many years and I support this message :)

@jwildeboer seconded! This stupid thing here (HL-5170DN) is 15 years old, has been through two cross-country moves without its original packaging, and is on… maybe its third toner cartridge? At this point I expect my child to inherit it.

Simple calculation. If you pack solar panels on the giant flat roofs of shopping malls (and maybe add them as shade covers on the giant parking places AND add some big storage batteries, you can offer FREE charging for all EVs, cover most of the power usage of the complete shopping mall and on good days even sell electricity to the grid. Same for airports. What's not to like? cc @isotopp

@jwildeboer I would love to buy a fridge that has 1-0 control input informing about surplus from PV. We already have this for wallboxes. I know I can use a smart socket. But that is not the same. I have to control it from somewhere and when I cut the power I lose the light in the fridge.

sesivany,
@sesivany@floss.social avatar

@mirek @jwildeboer seriously, why? If you don't open the fridge during the night, it doesn't have to run the compressor at all and new fridges have minimal standby consumption. If you wanna run it according to solar energy production during the day, you will get variability in temperature which is probably not the best for stuff stored in the fridge.

I guess I will write a blog entry on this with pictures and stuff, but when you live in Central Europe, in a city, and you think about getting an electric bicycle, here's my advice. You want something practical. A city bike. Hub gears, 3 are enough, you'll only use the 3rd gear anyway as your bike is electric. You don't need fancy middle drive. Go for a 250W front wheel motor. Get a comfy saddle. Big bags. Make sure it has lights, mud flaps and chain protection. It's a tool. Go robust, not fancy

This is my go-to electric bicycle. Around 700€. I charge it maybe twice a week. The battery is removable, so I can take it upstairs while the bicycle stays in the garage. I added big bags and a crate. I don't care about looks. I care about practical use. I commute 16 km every day. It's brilliant. I go shopping with it. Easily carries 30-40 kg of shopping stuff if needed. It's a no-brainer, IMHO.

Hello new citizens of the ! Here's the only advice you need, IMHO. Learn to block and mute. Share what you like. Block the naysayers and "yes, but" and "Here's how to fediverse and you are doing it wrong" people. There is no algorithm, so it's Your timeline, Your decision. Just be friendly and open and accepting and add them ALT texts to all pix you post, deal? Enjoy!

@jwildeboer I'm probably going to get blocked or muted for asking that question, but I mean it genuinely: is creating an echochamber by blocking or muting people who respectfully disagree or would like to add more nuance to the discussion the most optimal way of using a decentralised platform?

I mean I get it for those reinforcing their own way of using the platform, but for the example you mentioned "yes but.." that might not be malicious at all, and could contribute to a deeper discussion.

Chozo,

@unexpectedteapot

is creating an echochamber by blocking or muting people [...] ?

Yes, but that's 100% your right on the Fediverse. If you want an echochamber, that's an option for you. If you don't want that, then you don't have to create one. It's not the default option, but it's an available one. Some people don't want to have their beliefs challenged online; maybe they get enough of that in their personal lives and just want a place that's less antagonizing toward them when they're spending their time on their phone or whatever. Or maybe they're not here for discussion in the first place, and they're just here for caturday pics.

It's not for me, but I can understand the appeal of it. Personally, I start to get a little irritated when I keep seeing the same things over and over, so I try not to block people unless they're actively being a nuisance.

If some people say the is a left-progressive project, it only shows how successful we collectively are to block the Nazis. Loads of far-right instances and users exist in the fediverse. Gab, anyone? But defederation and blocking makes that part invisible to most of us. They still exist and federate amongst themselves. ActivityPub, the protocol, is neutral. We decide what we want and not want. The fediverse is a herd of Venn diagrams, not a closed circle.

Added threads.net to the blocklist on my instance. I have no interest in federating with Facebook/Meta services.
