I'm reading EX-WIFE (https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/2142191.Ex_Wife) by Ursula Parrott. Written in 1929, the language is so 2023 modern despite being written 100 years ago. Name checks Fitzgerald & Hemingway in the book who are Parrott's contemporaries. @internetarchive has it available. A++ Would recommend.

@ExcessivelyDiverting @bookstodon re: the poll: I don't care which version(s) you prefer but don't yuck on other people's yums. Don't start arguments that 1995 is better because of X or that 2005 is better because of Y. I'm not here for it and I will block you if you go down that path.

Tolkien can suck it.

@glowl @bookstodon Same. I have a mix of US/UK covers and paperbacks/hardbacks. No rhyme or reason, just how it worked out when buying his work.

heroineinabook,
@heroineinabook@mastodon.online avatar

@theotherotherone @bookstodon For sure not cheap but using your numbers, that brings each book to $22.50 (USD) which isn't /bad/ since it is 40 books and typical hardcover price is from $27-32USD. Fun to think about it! And the covers are gorgeous.

@LostNetizen @qwxlea @bookstodon Discworld Emporium is one of if not the top one Discworld merch sites, so I would trust their quality. And did you email them your questions?

heroineinabook,
@heroineinabook@mastodon.online avatar

@qwxlea @bookstodon I have a mix of Josh Kirby covers with UK/US versions, paperback and hardback (last ten books are hardback since he was an auto-buy for me. Miss Terry Pratchett fall!). Would I buy this anyway if I had the cash and space? Probably yes. And I wouldn't get them from Amazon, I'd order them from DE or another bookseller so I'm not getting crap.

@monkeyben @bookstodon That's correct. New cover art.

heroineinabook,

@Pandastorm @bookstodon Exactly this! I got turned on to Anita in 2005 when quite a few of her books were already out. It was Obsidian Butterfly (book 8 or 9) that I was like, nope, not doing this. Also, Merry getting banged by four genderless fae? BRING IT ON! Anita breathing and getting eaten out? No thank you.

Also! No mention of . Which is incredibly successful in prompting indie to self-pubbed - to trad pub authors. Look at Colleen Hoover! It's not like is low key. Hell, local indie bookstore had a “As Seen on Booktok" shelf talkers. Loss of opportunities was that article.

Finished reading #LordOfScoundrels by Loretta Chase and I found it 2.5/5. Just overall meh. I had to slog through the sexy times and some of Chase's wording brought to mind the book was not written in this century, and I was right: 1995. Who knew #Smut had a expiration date? Not sure what prompted me to read this? Probably read somewhere it was a rec since Chase is considered a grand dame of #Romance. Do not think I'll read more of her work.

On nom de plume's Mastodon account, I unfolllowed all but the instance admin and also unfollowed groups and hashtags. I brought what I liked over here. Gonna give it a day or so to see what else shows up in the feed and do the same (unfollow there, follow here).

How do super active authors do this? ESPECIALLY WITH PEN NAMES??? #AmWriting #AmPublishing #WritingCommunity

I know financially it's better to support buying the books direct as the author gets paid per page on (last I knew) but I just can't swing it. Also, I don't typically read a book more than once (see ) and using Kindle Unlimited makes sense. Now to get through my pile... @bookstodon

heroineinabook,
@heroineinabook@mastodon.online avatar

@EllenInEdmonton @bookstodon I used to use Scribd back ye olden days when I was an academic librarian and didn't care for the service. Also, a lot of the books were illegal content. Dunno if that's changed but the authors I want to read are NOT on Scribd or don't have all their books (I checked for a few). I have yet to see an support Scribd. I'm already tied to the Kindle eco system via my libraries who use Overdrive to disseminate eBooks to Kindle which is handy as hell.

Yes, people have differing opinions. Yes, we're not all going to like the same books. That's great. But some of the reasons were "read 2 pages; hated it." Have we become so used to the same old shit (20 something creatives with shitty bfs who live in NYC) that something new seems odd? CAN WE NOT EXPAND OUR HORIZONS?? @bookstodon

heroineinabook,
@heroineinabook@mastodon.online avatar

When I worked in a bookstore, I was an asshole about books (oh noes, reading ! You are terrible!) but I got my ass handed to me because we should be celebrating that people ARE and not gatekeep what they are reading. I'm not spending my time reading crap as I define it or "literature" which is pretentious crap. I have thoughts about this topic and many others around this topic. @bookstodon

My friend Emily Drabinski is the incoming president of the American Library Association. She has been named by the Montana State Library Commission as the reason they are withdrawing Montana from the American Library Association. This is bullshit.

The ALA issued a statement about this which is all about ALA. Emily deserves our support. Please join me in signing this letter in solidarity with her and her work. Thank you.

You do NOT have to be an ALA member or work in a library to sign this petition. However, if you align with Emily's politics (outlined in the letter), then please sign it. https://bit.ly/emilydrabinski @bookstodon
