I've just finished "all the light we cannot see". It follows two kids, german orphan, and a blind french girl, in parallel, while their lives get derrailed by the war. Somehow they manage to be true to themselves among the mayhem. Starts slow, but picks up speed. I loved It.

¿How did you liked it?

@morgan @bookstodon Yeah, right?

The fact that the main plot is decided a few chapters before the end was neat to me. As a reader I got surprised by the unfolding of circumstances.

@CMDoran @bookstodon Yes! It's so neat. Small chapters, and the stories are sequential; gives you some structure among the mayhem of war.

@DarkMatterZine @bookstodon Oh, that's interesting! I didn't catch the albino reference, but I have to agree with you in that one. But then, wouldn't you find Werner to also be a victim of Nazism? He was a kid doing a men's work. And he is being traumatized by their actions, don't you think?

@bookstodon I just finished "Lush Life", by Richard Price. It felt a immersion into the struggle of living in NY.

A while back I was describing the idea of video rental stores to my kid and she was absolutely enthralled by the idea that you walk around a story to see pictures of all the movies, and at the end there was candy and popcorn. This is not the best example, but it's an interesting example of how efficiency, though good, often costs nice tactile things.

Counterpoint: hardware stores, bookstores, stationary supply stores still survive. Ergo there was something inherently wrong with BlackBuster and the like. Too much merchandising I'd say.

Wonder if we could have a place in which to borrow books, movies and the like, for free, and hang out. That would be the ball.

Can anyone tell me why d’Aulnoy sorts after W and before Ø?

@matthewtoad43 @sooper_dooper_roofer @mondoman712 Oh, but you don't have to enforce the fine every single time. Speed should be monitored for every car, all the time, and then apply statistical analysis to punish.

Therefore if you were wrongfully accused, you'll be ok, as you follow the law most of the time. But those who play fast n furious at every opportunity would be certainly caught as the murderous type that they are.

18+ gabriel,
@gabriel@col.social avatar

@matthewtoad43 @sooper_dooper_roofer @mondoman712 But why don't we have a fifth-element kind of system? Every car is monitored all the time, every driver has to be identified biometrically. Then you'll get the statistics. This will give a throve of data for city planning, etc

I completely judge a book by its cover.

It’s not fair to books that may not have that attractive of a cover, but it is what it is-most especially when it’s an author or title I am unfamiliar with. The book below is evidence of this. This cover completely grabbed ahold of my attention. Not only did I read the synopsis, but I also knew I wanted to paint the other half. This is an older picture, but I’ve finally started reading it. While the synopsis is not one I’d gravitate towards, I’m giving it a chance, & all b/c of the initial attraction to the cover. @bookstodon

@mlanger @diazona @DarkMatterZine @EpiphanicSynchronicity @likewise @bookstodon Then, why you worry about it being out in the wild? Most of these old media was not archived anywhere, and can only be preserved by piracy. Think on the lost software.

I didn't mean to put words into you. I understand your point. Sorry if I came out as "that guy". 🥹

I'm not arguing against copyright in entirely. I was thinking about this work in particular. Fair enough, you didn't agree for it to be free. But I ask you, should you?

Any chance anybody here knows where or how to find a copy of this book for a more reasonable price?
