Fuck it. I'm making it public. Boost this motherfucker to the moon and back.

I am a male victim of domestic violence.

We exist. Listen to our stories. And fucking believe us.

Do any of my #ActuallyAutistic comrades find any particular vitamins, herbs, foods, or the avoidance of them to be helpful with their self-regulation?

NOTE I am NOT speaking about quack autism “cures” peddled on the net. I am speaking about things which help with regulation.

@theautisticcoach @actuallyautistic No booze, magnesium biglycinate (not oxide unless you want liquid shits), omega 3 fish oils, vitamin D, and Ashwagandha all seen to help.

Both mag and vitamin D are needed for melatonin production. Western diets are hugely defective in mag, and being Irish / in tech / ginger / autistic my vitamin D levels are always low without supplements

@devxvda@mastodon.ie avatar

@theautisticcoach @actuallyautistic I have a theory that ND people seem to have a higher proportion of sushi lovers (it's on like every second Hiki profile) due to a lack of omega 3 fish oil in the diet.

Once I started supplementing with high dose fish oil my cravings for sushi stopped.

@niamhgarvey @theautisticcoach @actuallyautistic sample size of 1, sadly.

Need to run an open label trial. Wonder if Bulk will sponsor the high EPA/DHA fish oil gelcaps they sell. 😂

@bike @theautisticcoach @actuallyautistic I don't have a thyroid issue. I get tested every year as a family member does have a thyroid issue - I always get the one they have confused, it's the one that makes you thin.

Thyroid issues are somewhat "common" in Ireland, along with bowel cancer, asthma, and cystic fibrosis.

devxvda,
@devxvda@mastodon.ie avatar

@niamhgarvey @theautisticcoach @actuallyautistic The downside of having a vendor sponsor a trial, even open label, is bias.

Unless someone wants to pay me money to buy them myself and run the trial 😂

@marews @theautisticcoach @actuallyautistic The upper tolerable limit for vitamin D is 4000 IU. UTL essentially is the max dose before side effects kick in.

I take 4000IU most days, occasionally 1600IU.(mixed with calcium) in summer. Made a huge difference to my sleep.

Dont mix magnesium and calcium at the same time. Both are absorbed by the same mechanism, wasting a lot of either mineral

devxvda,
@devxvda@mastodon.ie avatar

@niamhgarvey @theautisticcoach @actuallyautistic I'm only slightly joking.

There have been trials with omega3 fish oil for ADHD that have some contradictory results. Difficult to tell exactly why, but the trend appears to be "at least a tiny bit helpful"

How do my comrades explain “Autism” to others?

@theautisticcoach @actuallyautistic My brain is wired differently. It has a lot more wires in some places, and less in others.

@theautisticcoach @actuallyautistic Dark room, weighted blanket, loop quiets.

If really bad hold breath and dunk face into freezing cold / ice water to trigger VNS

@actuallyautistic I'm not #actuallyautistic but I got #adhd diagnosed at 29, realizing that all cliche symptoms and diagnostic surveys are very superficial crap, lacking many subtle aspects.

I wonder, are the "cliche symptoms" for autism any good? E.g. can someone be autistic even if they can "read" other people just fine, and have no noticeable "special interest" or "rigid routines"?

Am I correct thinking this "special interest" thing must be rather persistent, like years/life long?

Thanks!

devxvda,
@devxvda@mastodon.ie avatar

@jenandra @zenforyen @fishidwardrobe @actuallyautistic Masking, specifically a stupidly high CAT-Q score, is why I ended up being diagnosed with TRD, atypical high functioning depression, GAD, SA and panic disorder instead of the much saner autism.

@devxvda@mastodon.ie avatar

@jenandra @zenforyen @fishidwardrobe @actuallyautistic "But you can't be autistic, you're normal!"

"Dude. I hear lightbulbs and attempting eye contact makes me absorb the other person's soul for Christ sake".

Have my comrades ever been told that they “walk autistically”?

@actuallyautistic

devxvda,
@devxvda@mastodon.ie avatar

@theautisticcoach @actuallyautistic I was told I have "an abnormal gait" in a few shoe shops.

devxvda,
@devxvda@mastodon.ie avatar

@theautisticcoach @actuallyautistic I also wear out the soles of shoes in... Not normal places.

My cobbler put Lulu¹ tips on the areas that frequently wear out for me first², as well as some small changes to the heel block.

__
¹ A brand of metal half circles that usually go on the tips of shoes. She puts the "tips" both at the top of the shoe (as intended) and on the parts that wear out the most. This makes the dress shoes sound more clicky than normal.

² Except on rubber soles
