dannym,

If we’re serious about transforming the conversation around this issue, we’ve got to be more intentional with the words we choose. Let’s call a spade a spade: labeling them as “personalized ads” is a gross understatement.

It’s more than that. It’s like someone constantly lurking behind you, watching every move you make, and getting into the private spaces of your mind. It isn’t mere content tailoring—it’s relentless stalking and a brazen assault on our psyche.

We need to call it what it is.

dannym,

My intention wasn’t to equate ads with psychological trauma, but rather to emphasize the profound impact such invasive practices can have on our sense of privacy and autonomy. The terminology of ‘personalized ads’ can often obscure the magnitude of surveillance behind it. I understand that this might come across as hyperbolic to some, but it’s essential to articulate the depth of concern many feel.

dannym,

You don’t understand, your lights need to track you, how else are they going to improve your user experience? Using lights is so complicated that it requires them to train AI models to better understand the necessities of users. The methods that have worked for hundreds of years cannot work with today’s users

dannym,

the state of developer pays in italy is infuriating. 15/h for a developer is unbearably low, even in europe.

dannym,

I recommend infuse over swiftfin. Swiftfin is FOSS, so it has that going for it, but Infuse works better right now.

dannym,

I hate humanity sometimes, why would they send death threats? Just don’t use their engine; this is the way you actually make a change – switch to something else, threatening people does not help you prove your point. I hate their new pricing changes too, but death threats are never warranted

dannym,

join a community with your values, lemmy is federated, if you don’t like your community join another :)

dannym,

Why is kagi not on the list?

dannym,

no way, you’re telling me that lmg spreads misinformation? who could’ve guessed /s

dannym,

yeah the linux videos were when I first noticed their lack of research, I always suspected it, but the linux videos made it obvious. Linus did absolutely NO research and put no critical thinking in those videos whatsoever

My wish: a website with a no login and no friction chatbox that directly sends me messages to my Matrix (or otherwise E2E chat) account

Today, if people I meet in person want to communicate with me, they have to download and login Matrix apps or have to receive a password from me for the Tutanota encrypted emails. In either case, there is extra friction that they are not used to....

dannym,

How about cactus? it’s technically designed for comments on a blog (I’m using it on escapebigtech.info for example), but it allows you to use any matrix room and if you set it up to use a different matrix room every time it loads the page it will work perfectly for your usecase.

Please keep in mind that if you decide to adopt it, Cactus can only exist if you help it exist, if you can afford it and you get value from it, I encourage you to support the developers through donations. Embrace the Value4Value principle!

dannym,

definitely agree, but it shouldn’t be just funds for server costs, also funds that go towards the developers of lemmy. if we want lemmy to improve, this needs to become the developer’s primary full-time job, and the only way to do that is to have a much more substantial amount of funds coming their way each month.

dannym,

paraphrasing Linus Torvalds: “talk is cheap, show your actions” (original: “talk is cheap, show me the code”)

dannym, (edited )

This didn't happen to louis, or anyone in the rossmann group, this was a news story, he just happens to retell it.

EDIT: I was thinking of another video, ignore what I said.

dannym,

We should stop calling cloud-connected iot devices "smart". How is it "smart" to connect to the internet just to check if you can use your internet-connected doorbell?

Actual smart home devices are AWESOME. If your iot devices use standard, open protocols, don't connect to the internet, except for your local network and can be controlled from anywhere in your house by using tools like Home Assistant, then they're ACTUALLY smart devices.

We should start calling cloud iot devices "dependent" devices.

The term "dependent" more accurately represents the nature of these devices: they are reliant on internet connectivity and proprietary protocols, limiting user control and adding unnecessary complexity to simple tasks. Unlike truly "smart" devices, these "dependent" devices are less functional and flexible, due to their need to always be tethered to the cloud.

Think about it: if your internet goes down, your "smart" doorbell becomes nothing more than an ordinary doorbell. If the company's servers have an outage, your "smart" security system can't alert you of potential dangers. You're left completely in the dark, with supposedly advanced technology that's completely useless when it's most needed.

With truly smart devices that use standard, open protocols and can function independently of the internet, you maintain control and can adapt your system to meet your needs. Even without internet, these systems can continue to monitor your home, control your lights, and more. That's the real power of smart technology.

So let's change the language we use and the expectations we set for this technology. Let's demand independence from the cloud, security, and reliability from our devices. It's time to transition from "dependent" devices to truly smart home technology.

dannym,

Oh you're right I'm sorry, this is not the video I thought it was. I thought it was the video from a few days ago when he was talking about what happened to Brandon Jackson!

dannym,

I agree with what you're saying, but remember that open source software cannot happen without individual contributions and donations. If you have some money to spare, even just $1 dollar, please consider donating it to the developer of Lemmy. It's obviously not a requirement, but it helps keep the project going!

dannym,

Matrix is the ultimate alternative to Discord! It’s a FOSS protocol, which has numerous server and client implementations available—much like the ActivityPub protocol.

dannym,

people don’t just use discord for private communication, and that’s what should be searchable. also, you do realize that discord doesn’t feature any encryption and some people can read your “private” messages, right?

dannym,

Xmpp is far from death. Just because many started to use matrix instead doesn’t mean it’s dead. Even though matrix is a Ressource and performance nightmare much more so than xmpp will ever be.

How is matrix a performance nightmare? been running a matrix server for years with almost no issues. I guess the only exception was the few times I ran out of hdd space, but that’s it.

Xmpp is a an official Standard.unlikr things like matrix.

What’s an official standard? Matrix is a protocol just like xmpp and the specs are public, just like with xmpp.

Matrix is a nightmare to selfhost, too.

It’s literally as easy as running a docker container and editing a yaml file, at least for synapse.

dannym,

I don’t understand the ability to have an emotional connection to a corporation.

I do, but the corporations I have a connection with are not the ones people think of usually, it’s the ones that are FOSS-first, or the ones that actually fight for what they believe. i.e. not 99.99% of corporations.

dannym,

google didn’t come up with passkeys. It’s an idea that originated from the FIDO Alliance (of which google is A MEMBER).
