Love this post. I’ll pin it for more visibility. And once you get a good list, I can add to the sidebar. Oh, I’d also put each link on a new line, just to make it easier to read. It looks one long link in each section, currently. Or like you said, I can make a post later and organize it if you want too.

My contributions:

Dan Murrell on YouTube. I find I’m in agreement with his reviews most of the time.

The Filmcast podcast is the only one I listen to regularly these days.

Oh yeah, it’s the Lemmy formatting. if you put 2 spaces or a backslash at the end it will add a line break and it won’t be double spaced, if you want to tighten it up a bit. Also you can insert a horizontal line by typing at least 3 dashes if that’s what you were going for with the row of pound signs. Looks like this:

Thanks for updating, looks great!

[DISCUSSION] What director(s) do you think have the best filmography?

I was checking out the new season of Fargo, which made me want to rewatch the 1996 movie and I got to thinking, the Coen Brothers have a fantastic filmography. They have way more hits than misses and they make some of the most interesting movies out there. No Country for Old Men is probably one of my favorites of all time. So...

@canthidium@lemmy.world avatar

Oh yes! Villeneuve is my favorite director working currently. I’d probably agree that Enemy is his worst, but it’s still a great film. Dude just doesn’t miss.

I’m going to have to go back and watch more of Gilliam. I’ve only seen Monty Python, The Fisher King, and 12 Monkeys. Somehow I missed Fear and Loathing when I was younger and never got around to it. And I’ve heard great things about Brazil and his recent works.

canthidium,
@canthidium@lemmy.world avatar

Yeah, 4 out of the 6 features he’s directed have been Star Wars films and at least half of those I’d consider bad. I’m not saying he isn’t influential or important when you look at the history of film, but if I’m looking at a the best director filmographies, GL’s isn’t even in the top 10 for me. Just on variety alone, it’s pretty weak.

Will do, thanks for the suggestion!

I’m a huge fan of body horror and Cronenberg is the king. His son, Brandon, has been doing interesting stuff as well. Highly recommend Possessor if you haven’t seen it.

Fincher is one of my favs of all time. I just love how purposeful he is. Every camera angle and dolly move is for a specific reason. Nothing is a mistake in his films.

Oh yeah, I love Miyazaki. I got to visit the Ghibli museum a few years ago and it was amazing.

canthidium,
@canthidium@lemmy.world avatar

With you on both. Although, I gotta be in the mood for Wes Anderson sometimes. I love his movies, but if I’m not in the mood, I find I don’t enjoy them as much, even on rewatch.

Nolan is always amazing to me. Audio issues aside, I enjoyed Tenet more than most, as well.

canthidium,
@canthidium@lemmy.world avatar

He’s going to be great I believe. He’s made 3 movies so far, the biggest name being Infinity Pool earlier this year. I liked it, but I can see how people wouldn’t. Antiviral is a good, especially for a debut. But I think Possessor is the most interesting, and Andrea Riseborough is so good in everything she does.

OP is specifically asking about dirs but yeah some DOPs might have filmographies to rival them.

Lol, I didn’t want to say it. But for sure, especially the ones like Deakins that form basically a partnership with certain directors and do almost all their movies.

canthidium,
@canthidium@lemmy.world avatar

Yeah, I’m a cinematography and logistics nerd. I am fascinated by just how they do things in film a lot and Nolan is great for that.

And the music was great, I did not mind that it was too loud!

I think the big issue was the dialogue was too low a lot of the time.

canthidium,
@canthidium@lemmy.world avatar

Haha, yes, definitely +1 for that.

Yeah, it was fine but as an Asian American, the name bothered me. I dunno why they didn’t just call it “The Kung Fu Kid” and market it as a spiritual successor.

canthidium,
@canthidium@lemmy.world avatar

I love that we’re getting all this Asian cinema nowadays, but there’s still more to do. Like you said, lumping all Asians together still. And even still, a lot is all about being Asian. Say what you will about the Fast and Furious movies, but the character of Han is what we need more of. A character that just happens to be Asian, and his whole personality isn’t just “Asian dude”. He’s just a guy, and that’s awesome.

I use it all the time. Only issue I have is it sometimes keeps my phone screen on.

canthidium,
@canthidium@lemmy.world avatar

I read it as “bum acne” at first and was, likewise, very confused.

I wasn’t planning on watching at all, but it’s getting good reviews and it’s Roth’s highest rated. I may go check it out.

Nice, glad to hear it.

Not bad. Very much an homage to old slasher flicks. I didn’t even realize this is the movie to go with his trailer from Grindhouse. It’s been so long, I forgot about those trailers. It’s campy, over the top, and pretty fun. Definitely not without faults, but overall a decent time.

Once the killer is revealed, a lot of the previous scenes don’t really make sense. The cast is way too old to be playing high school kids, but they meshed well. I couldn’t stand anyone in the movie, and was rooting for the killer, though, lol. They are all pretty horrible people, outside of the main girl. The opening scene was kind of depressing for me, just a reminder of our consumer-based culture and the horrible people in it.

But I loved the kills. One felt a little mean spirited, but overall they were silly and way over the top. The ‘Baw-ston’ accents were cracking me up. Especially the Hanover kid. He must have gone to the Eli Roth ‘Inglourious Basterds’ school of Boston accents. It was just crazy. I wish it leaned a little more into the camp and silliness, but overall, I had fun.

it’s a 30 year old movie

No way is True Lies 30 years old. It came out in 1994. That was only…oh no, I’m old…

I don’t know where any of the positive reviews are coming from. It was awful. Not even for a MCU movie, it was a bad movie, period. Everything is so disjointed and all over the place. There’s no explanation for things that need explanations and they over-explain things that are obvious. The villain, while having some motivation, was just weak and forgettable.

Brie Larson was in and out. Sometimes she was decent, but a lot of times felt like she was reading off cue cards. Teyonah Parris was OK, but she’s terrible at fight choreography. She kept running up and getting in position constantly and just looked off. Sam Jackson was a clown. I mean I don’t think he had a single line that wasn’t a joke. I don’t even get his characterization at all. Iman Vellani was the best thing about this film. She was a delight every time she was on screen and I love how she’s the new ‘Fury’ in recruiting the YA team. Glad to see references to the other members finally.

The whole singing planet was just…IDK. The flerkin stuff was OK but I felt wore out its welcome, especially the end there. But the mid credits scene was interesting. Beast looked kinda weird, but he seems to be a completely CGI character and not Kelsey Grammar, despite using his voice. So I wonder if the X-Men are only in that universe. It would give an explanation why we haven’t seen any mutants up until recently.

I’m still in as a long time Marvel fan, but wow, this movie was a mess.

canthidium,
@canthidium@lemmy.world avatar

Agreed on the cons. That planet was just dumb. And yeah that credits scene was definitely a fishing line to Marvel/X-Men fans.

canthidium,
@canthidium@lemmy.world avatar

I watched it a few days ago and really enjoyed it. But I can see how some might not. I don’t want to give away much but it can come off as “what was the point?” after watching, but IMO, that’s the point. Fassbender’s character is not exactly a reliable narrator. If you look at him as having a higher opinion of himself and his skills than who he actually is, it makes sense. That said, I think if you are a Fincher can already, you’ll enjoy it. There’s an amazing, brutal, fight scene that is almost worth the viewing alone.

canthidium,
@canthidium@lemmy.world avatar

It looked alright. Saw it’s not getting great reviews.
