Those of you caught up debating the technical minutiae of federating with Threads are missing the forest for the trees.

This is about one thing: Affording social capital to/normalising/legitimising Meta/Facebook/surveillance capitalism (and thereby delegitimising those who oppose them).

Hey, if the author of Mastodon thinks Meta/Facebook/Instagram/surveillance capitalism is socially acceptable there must be something wrong with you if you don’t.

So thanks for that, Eugen.

(Yes, I’m livid.)

@aral

we need commerce on Mastodon

Mastodon will always be fringe and vulnerable to being kneecapped by the likes of Facebook if it isn't financially muscular itself, growing and robust. i want to see Mastodon reach a billion users on our terms. that doesn't mean ads for Exxon and Nestle it means ads for tractor repair in Omaha and pottery in Adelaide

if anyone thinks Mastodon can compete functioning on the serene benevolence of admins moderating and keeping servers humming on donations alone we're dooming Mastodon to fringe failure. if we introduce commerce the right way, our way, our terms, we can be a positive force and change the social media landscape by showing the world better

"you want to give in and be just like Facebook and Twitter"

no!

privacy preserved, ads only from what we decide. our terms

but too many think the only choices are zero commerce or Trump NFTs. as if moderation can't handle vile ads

accretionist,
@accretionist@techhub.social avatar

@sexybenfranklin @aral a perfectly valid opinion. and i disagree with you. and since this is decentralized I'll go my way and you go yours

if you don't see any value in actively seeking to destroy Facebook, Twitter, and TikTok for what they are doing to our politics, society, and psychological well-being, you do you

accretionist,
@accretionist@techhub.social avatar

@santiago @sexybenfranklin @aral i don't understand the "trillion dollar system" remark. if some guys goes to his local newspaper to put an ad out for tractor repair, or if sone guy goes to his local mastodon instance to put an ad out for tractor repair, what's the difference? i think there's this fear that it's some slippery slope to facebookification when it's just the typical "local ad in local paper" model and doesn't automatically imply anything more nefarious

everything else you say i totally get and it's worth trying too

accretionist,
@accretionist@techhub.social avatar

@santiago @sexybenfranklin @aral oh! got it. I misunderstood the trillion dollar comment

Yeah I'm just interested in the small local paper with small local ads model. Mainly to support the instance. So you and I are addressing problemsets that are orthogonal to one another. You're concerned about the best way for people to find services. I'm looking to pump some financial stability into mastodon so the guys and gals running the servers and doing the moderation dont go dark or remain tiny. because then mastodon can really grow

accretionist,
@accretionist@techhub.social avatar

@sexybenfranklin @santiago @aral how does any moderation work? You look at a comment and decide. You look at an ad and decide.

U.S. Deputy Marshal Bass Reeves was the most feared lawman of the old West. Standing a muscular 6‘2“ tall, he was was relentless and absolutely formidable. Alive or on a stretcher, Reeves always got his man, no matter how long it took, or how arduous the task. No sensible outlaw messed with him. But some fools had to find out the hard way.

Republicans are a lost cause. If there is any hope for the US we must reform the Democratic Party and not tolerate their continued moves to the right or their own mishandling of Covid. Being not as bad as the Republicans is not good enough.

@rchusid

i'm slightly allergic to criticism of the Democrats

not because they don't deserve it, but oftentimes the topic is but a "both sides" troll angle to shift blame and negative attention away from the GOP

i'm not saying you're doing that, i'm just making you aware of a propaganda narrative you might unwittingly feed into

so reform the Democrats by shifting agendas to more progressive concerns as a matter of proof positive action, rather than boosting acidic infighting and giving the GOP a reprieve

keep the GOP on full blast, always and as first imperative
