WashedOver, to technology in Has HP printers always been this bad?
@WashedOver@lemmy.ca avatar

In my later years it was Lenovo old and new after trying to accommodate a flashy Asus laptop one of the office staff had to have. It didn’t work with any of the desktop docks and there was no FN lock. After that I preferred even older off lease Lenovo over anything else. Tried to accommodate a Macbook for the same user later on and then said she was on her own for that. I said I hadn’t used a Mac since they were in a lovely solid grey case with a monochrome screen and floppy drive built in and it’s wasn’t one of the M&M shaped ones from her youth either.

Thankfully I was one of the owners so I could at that stage 😇

I use to love my old Canon multifunctions in the office until they didn’t support the new then windows 7 with drivers. I noped out of owning more Canons then. I dealt with various POSs from HP as their old 4200 series were tanks. Their consumer inkjet I bought over the years were nothing but headaches especially in a office environment. I’ll never buy another HP again. I used a couple of Epson printers but their drivers kept needing to be re-installed.

Brother printers aren’t flashy or full of options on the lower levels but they just seem to work without a fuss. Even when I started using Linux again they were picked up on the network without an issue and I didn’t even need to install a driver at all.

I’ve gone with a smaller brother ink-vestment multifunction at home now and it’s been great for a ink jet.

I still rock a T430 with a quad core, SSDs, 16gb of ram and a upgraded 1440p screen. Works well with Window10 and Linux. I did the T420 keyboard mod so I still get the older keyboard.

@WashedOver@lemmy.ca avatar

Not being familiar with all things oil and gas would be pretty common for people not living in areas where it is processed or compressed. It’s much like a Linux enthusiast being upset at Windows and Mac users not realizing there are other OSs for computers. Might not be in their realm of thought.

Natural has been a wonderfully misleading marketing term for food products too. There’s no regulations in the US on what one calls “natural” ingredients. Most people mistake it for being like organic just as intended. Natural just sounds good. Unfortunately radioactive material can be natural too.

Lol. I still refer to FB as Bookface but hardly anyone knows the reference.

As for my poor gf she has a Switch that I always call a Wii and I’m like did you charge your Wii? How was playing your Wii today? She hates it 😂

There are some good families out there as I’ve dated myself into some of them over the years.

However there are many where you can hear the banjos playing a little too close when you go to a family event like a wedding.

It takes having your own banjos at times to know which ones are really playing them and which ones to cut out which is hard for many. I’ve been able to do it over the years but it wasn’t easy for others to understand. I know I’m better off for it in the long run.

Sorry to hear.

I’ve chosen not to have kids by choice and I use to hear all the time from coworkers that weren’t born here, “gasp! what about your grandkids and your old age? Who will take care of you? You will regret it!”

Many years later now that I’m older I hear from the same ones say I made the right decision. “You get to enjoy your life and not to worry what those little a-holes have done wrong now. They aren’t a burden you can’t get rid of” I then usually ask them are they sure it’s not too late to abort?

People are weird, including me…

WashedOver, to programmer_humor in Microsoft Edge could use a win
@WashedOver@lemmy.ca avatar

There was a while there where it would default to Edge for PDFs and as a web browser after a update. Quite annoying for a factory full of PCs that I wanted to use Chrome and Adobe Reader instead.

I tried Edge for a bit but stuck with chrome. Recently I’ve gone back to Firefox but I’ve not had one of those major updates yet that even tries to get me to log into Microsoft as a log in so it will be interesting when that happens again if Edge shows up as the default.

WashedOver, to technology in How Google Alters Search Queries to Get at Your Wallet
@WashedOver@lemmy.ca avatar

I’m pretty reliant on a couple of big providers I find. Usually Amazon is my first search stop then Google. I find I need to disable my ad blockers to be able to use the sponsored links. I often am searching for a solution product not a specific item so I’m curious about the options. Then I narrow down into specific items which Google does a pretty good job of I find for me.

I was an early Google adopter so I’ve been using Google for a lot of things over the years.

I often use search within Google Maps to find locations hours, reviews on a experience, and a location or business’ website.

I’ve recently switched to Duck Duck Go and FF and I find it might be a familiarity to the types of localized results I miss as I’m still pretty plugged into the Google eco system and duck duck go doesn’t seem to hit the mark as closely for me.

WashedOver, to canada in Canada is the only G7 country without a national school food program. Advocates say it's time
@WashedOver@lemmy.ca avatar

Same here growing up in a small west coast town. There was rarely even a cafeteria that served hot meals until high school and it wasn’t much as it was run by students for economics/business class. They also managed a small store that sold junk food and pop.

I did go to high school in Calgary for a bit but I was mostly in shock by the full time RCMP office in the school and the diversity of students beyond the mostly First Nations and Caucasians I grew up with so the lunch situation wasn’t really something I recall.

I suspect much has changed since then as this was in the early 90s.

I recall leaving school to go to local fast food joints or the convenience store for something to eat as far back as junior high. I’ve seen plenty of this with local convenience stores near schools too.

Recently I was in Cranbrook BC and stopped at a Safeway around lunchtime. I was floored at how many students were there getting lunch. It seemed like it was a big deal for the store as I hadn’t seen such a large deli and sandwich areas in big city Safeways. The high school was across the street so perhaps it acts as a cafeteria in this case.

I’m curious how public food programs are delivered in schools.
